Interested in getting a bait caster setup?

Hi there, I use a light ugly stik spinning combo with #15 power pro for all my bass and everything else and overall it's done a good job at it.

But i want to get a bait casting setup something a little bit more heavy that won't break the bank to see if it like it and to use as my bass and everything rod.

As for lures, I'll be throwing everything on it.

I was thinking of heading down to my local Walmart and picking out a heavy rod and reel and go from there.

This is my first time not buying a combo, So i'd like to hear some input on this subject.

If you shop around you can get a Black Max and Veritas for a little over $100. There are other options which offer good value and adequate performance. I know its easy to get the idea (not on this site of course ) that it would be nearly impossible to catch bass with anything other than an $800 oufit, but that's just not the case.

No rod will throw everything.

If you are thinking H, I would suggest MH instead.

If you are like most and throw a lot of light plastics, a Med is the choice.

If your going to be anything more than an occasional fisherman, avoid the ugly stick.

Bump your budget by a few cups of coffee and us the search function for rods around 100.00

Get a abu garcia combo. Itll get you started and its better than any walmart rod

I admit I'm a little biased. First, I agree with the above recommendations, but I would like to add a couple of other possibilities should you wish to consider them. Lew's makes some combos that might meet your needs; Okuma also seems to make some decent products as well.  I'm not a fan of buying rods and reels "sight unseen" regardless of recommendations; I would suggest you get your hands on anything, regardless of brand, and get a feel for it before you buy.

GrumpyoldPhartte mentioned getting a Lews combo. That is a good idea.  If you go on Dicks Sporting Goods website they have a $20 off  coupon on orders over $100.  There is two Lews combos available. They have a Lews Mach 1 and a Lews Mach 2 combo. The Lews Mach 2 is nicer but is more expensive of course.   If you look at a Mach one it comes with a nice 6'10" IM8 graphite rod and a good all metal 9 ball bearing reel.  It is available with the handle on the left or right.  The price is $129 so if you use their coupon you could get it for $109. They also offer free shipping, however many times you can order it inline and pick it up in store. i would check on these options

@Angealy: Your choice seems sound; however, before you pull the trigger, consider your favorite lures. In my experience, such as it is, the MH might be a little stiff for unweighted plastics such as flukes, finesse rigs, and unweighted T-rigs. You might be sacrificing distance when casting the aforementioned rigs; however, your current spinning combo can probably handle those. (You can always upgrade that UglyStik in the future.) Truth be told, I started back into fishing a couple of years ago with a couple of UglyStiks and they served me well, but I have since updated and found that, to me, there are inexpensive rods with considerably more sensitivity. I tend to agree with @NHBull. (He's a pretty smart fella as far as I can tell.) I still suggest you pop into some local stores to see if you can get the feel before you buy. For me, regardless of price, some reels just weren't "comfortable" to hold and cast for periods of time. If it feels right, then order online.  Good luck!

Just get yourself a 7-foot medium-heavy rod and something like a Abu Black Max or silver Max Baitcaster. And if you want to fish really light tackle or weightless senkos just throw it on the spinning set up you already have. You don't want to start off with a straight heavy rod cuz it will limit you too much.
