Jim Sutter Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 I belong to two Sportsmen Clubs. One of the ponds has very clean water, while the other one has very stained water. I believe the pond with the stained water, has the better bass population. My question to you folks is, what color of Jitterbug and Hula Popper should I be using. Also, how would you fish each lure and would you use brad with a fluorocarbon leader or straight mono. Most of the bass in this pond are 10" to 16". Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 15, 2017 Author Posted July 15, 2017 bigturtle, Thank you for your reply. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 This year, white with red and baby bass have worked best. I use 10lb braid to 6lb FC, lighten the drag. With these lures, fish hook themselves and the braid will give you better casting distance if you sure fishing Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 15, 2017 Author Posted July 15, 2017 Dorado and NHBull, Thank you for your information. I will try both ways. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 You can't go wrong with a frog pattern when fishing ponds. Add a Spook and you have the perfect trio. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 You can't go wrong with black when fishing ponds, I got a black Jitterbug so scratched that it's almost no longer black to prove my point. Do you need FC ? ...... whatever rocks your boat pal, I fish with nylon and unless somebody scientifically demonstrates me FC is superior to Nylon for that application I see no reason to change. 4 Quote
sully420 Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 I don't like floro for top water just use braid and a short mono leader to absorb shock. I like the black and yello popper Quote

I like the black and yello popper Oh yes, classic polka dot in yellow pattern, I like that one for poppers because I can see them, for Jitterbugs I don't think it's that important in my experience, they usually hammer it when it's on the move. Super User JustJames Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 Anyhow, I found to use loop knot with jitterbug give a better side to side action better yet use a snap no swivel with this lure. 1 Quote

You're so right. I tried a loop knot last time I fished a Jitterbug and I've never looked back. Snap is not as effective as the loop but is conveneint when you are switching among other top water hard lures like Zara Spooks, etc. Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 15, 2017 Author Posted July 15, 2017 My fingers do not work good enough to tie a loop. However, they can attach a snap to mono. I'll probably do this this evening. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 Jitterbug & Hula Popper = Old School . I still have a fondness for a Jitterbug but not the Hula Popper ! ... Even in the early 70's when I fished it as a kid ,I never caught anything on a Hula Popper (lol) . I'd replace the Hula Popper with another popper + a feathered rear treble hook of your choice . 1 Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 17, 2017 Author Posted July 17, 2017 ChrisD46, Thank you for your information. I definitely will work in a popper with a feathered tail. What color would you suggest for stained water on a bright sunny day? Quote
Rudy523 Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 If you like the Jitterbug, and I still use them try Livingston Lures Walking Boss II it works like a jitterbug and has great action. Fish seem to like it a lot Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 17, 2017 Author Posted July 17, 2017 Rudy523, Thank you for your reply. You take care and please have a wonderful and safe day. Quote
