Rods Sun and Heat

Will the sun and heat make a rod weak over time. Broke 3 rods in the last 3 trips to the lake. 1-2 weeks ago and 2 today. 1 cheep Walmart rod and 2 good Cabela's rods.

I try to not leave rods locked in the car during the super hot summer days of July and August.

 

When you open the car on a hot day and get that wave of heat, imagine your rods sitting in that oven for most of the summer.

 

My uneducated guess is that it would weaken the strength of the rod and possibly cause damage to your reels as well.

My rods are in a bass boat. It sets in the sun under a tarp when not in use, sure it gets super hot just setting there tarped in the sun.

The resin that binds rod materials are subject to degradation from ozone, UV and temperature extremes below 32 F and above 105 F.

Your problem may be do to rough handling more then environmental conditions. You never know who handled off the self rods before you bought it.

Just googled the inside temperature of a car and apparently if the outside temperature is between 80-100 degrees, the the inside of the car is between 130-172 degrees. I assume under a tarp,  in the sun, in a rod locker would be very similar. 

 

So adding to what @WRB mentioned, if the rods begin to degrade at 104 degrees, then it makes sense that some damage would occur over time at 172 degrees. Add to that any imperfections or rough handling.

I have removed my rods, reels and tackle box from my SUV due to the extreme heat.

 

No reason to chance damaging the equipment, especially the line guide glue.

 

When I do have the equipment in the SUV I always make sure I crack all four windows when I leave the car.

 

Better to be safe than sorry.

I wouldn't leave my rods in my vehicle based on my distrust for humans in general.

I keep my rods in rod racks in my shop in a room out of direct sun light.

I am interested in any data that says 105F is a problem for rod blanks.  I know from experience as an auto engineer that the inside of a car gets to about 140F when soaked in the sun at around 100F ambient, and at least that will affect a hot glued tiptop.  But I really think that blanks can take higher temps than 105F before being affected.

 

Keeping rods from being subjected to "high temps" is good common sense, but I doubt if 104F will cause any problems.  I also would like to see data that indicates that temps below 32F are a problem.  Pretty convenient that the resins are affected by the temp of the freezing point of water.  I keep my rods and reels in a pole barn, lots of exposure to temps of less than 32F, and I have both graphite rods dating from the 70's and glass rods dating from the 50's and they seem to be unaffected by the cold.

I leave my rods in my rod locker locked up, my boat is covered with a boat cover and is under a car port and does not see sun very much.

 

I have checked the temperature inside using a temperature gauge and it was 90 during mid day....my zman baits 

have not melted so thats a good thing LOL.

Who knows, but I have a couple of rods (KVD Quantums) that are on their 15th year of laying on the deck for 6-7 hour fishing days (some at 90 degrees air temp) and they are fine.  Obviously though they are in a rack in my basement when not in use

All my rods and reels are stored in my basement when not in use

I always apply a coat of wax on all my sticks to protect from UV damage

I also wax all my reels.
