FG Knot

So I've been trying to tie an FG knot recently, and have managed to tie it pretty well on heavier leader lines, but cannot manage to get it to tighten on smaller leader lines.  15lb braid to 15lb flouro works fine.  Using 15lb braid to 8lb flouro, and the knot just slides.  Is the diameter or 8lb flouro just too small for this to work, or has anyone figured out how to make this work?

No......I use 10#braid to 8# FC and have great success.

The trick is to really tighten it every 1/3 and do 20 wraps.

If it is slipping, is is usually haw you are finishing the knot

Edit......I do believe that when lines get that small the benifits of the FG subside and often use uni to uni

Maybe I will have to downsize braid, but I'm not a fan of too small a braid.  Seems like smaller braid are far less abrasion resistant than bigger braid, but I guess the leader can help that aspect.

Lots of anglers like the FG knot but a guide taught me how to tie a 5 turn uni to uni knot that has been working great for me. Try to tie that knot and see if it works for you. Be careful and make sure that each turn does not lay over the previous loop.  Once you make the first knot, wet it good, and pull it down to almost tight. Then tie the other uni knot and do the same. I then pull the lines so each knot slides up against each other. I then pull all four lines tight, tight, tight. Now just cut the tag ends and see how that works for you.

 

It has worked properly for me without a failure for over 5 years

Do 30 turns, I put 24 turns in my normal fg knots.

I've experimented with several types of line-to-line knots, and had been tying them to a scale and just pulling them to braking point to test strengths.  The uni-to-uni didnt fair as well as I'd like, but I'll have to try again with a more carefully tied knot to see how it goes.  Seems like all knots other than the FG break at the kink in the line where the braid is attached to the flouro, but maybe I'm just making bad knots.   Will revisit some knots tonight and experiment some more.

I have had the same problem with light lines breaking even with the FG knot.  The only leader knot I am confident tying for leaders less than 10 lbs is the improved slim beauty knot.  I actually switched to the improved slim beauty even for my leaders 10 lbs and up because it is so much easier to tie than the FG.  My lure knot always breaks before the leader knot anyways, and the slim beauty is only marginally bigger than the FG.  Time with lines in the water won that battle for me.

No disrespect intended, but if the Uni didn't perform well, there was a flaw somewhere, because testers consistently rate it at 97% and if doubled, it is one of the few 100%'s

I also have trouble with the FG on light lines, but the good news is that you don't need the small size advantage of the FG on lighter lines.  No way am I going to fool around trying to keep 30 turns straight and in good form when on the lighter lines the double uni is easy to tie, is reliable and goes through the smallest micros just fine.  Keep what you are trying to accomplish in mind - a solid, reliable, easy to tie knot that cleanly goes through the guides.

I've run into the same with light leader’s occasionally finishing up FG's.  If the braid slips after doing the two half hitches with the braid, I put a half hitch in just the leader and pull tight.  I clip the leader and two more half hitches with the braid. The half hitch in small fluorocarbon is so small you don't feel it going through the guides.  The knot prevents any possibility of the leader slipping through the braid, and allows the braid to draw even tighter on the leader.
