baitcaster Baitcaster Line

Hey guys,

 

I was looking into getting a baitcaster since I have never had one I thought what the heck why not give one a shot. There is just one thing holding me back what line to use? I have a pack of 25lb monofilament that has been sitting in my garage and was wondering if that would work? I have watched videos and read threads on what to use but it seems like everyone has a different preferences and wanted to know if the 25lb mono would work or if not what is best?

I would not put 25lb mono on it. I would suggest something like a 12lb copolymer or monofilament. And I would also suggest some line conditioner as well. 25Lb mono will have a lot of memory and will not handle well to a New baitcast learner. P-line cx, trilene xl, McCoy mean green, Seaguar senshi, or Berkley big game gets my vote. I would say use 40lb braid but braid is expensive and sometimes hard to find good braid. Mono is cheap, reliable, has good knot strength and can be found nearly everywhere.

25 pound mono is some  pretty thick stuff. I personally wouldn't use 25 pound mono when I can use braid that has a higher pound test and a much smaller diameter. Get some braid.

Lots of choices out there, but #25 monofilament would NOT be one I would recommend.

A specific suggestion would be #12 Seaguar AbrazX.

Thanks a lot guys. It felt really thick and I figured I should ask before I put it on and have all these problems. Any idea what this line was used on? I found 350 yards of it at a lake just sitting there so I took it. Any ideas of a good beginner baitcater and rod?

Agree with all above but it really depends on what lure you are going to throw as to what would be the best option.

My guess would be for catfish or trolling. When I first got a baitcaster I went too cheap and I got cheap results. I'm not sure what your budget is but I think good starter options are the Lews Laser MG, Lews LFS, Shimano Caenan, and the Lews Carbonfire are good starting reels.

Thanks a lot Lxve bassing, I will make sure to take a look at them and I am thinking of following what you said and go with the braided line as well. Do you put a leader on your line? I have heard that it is unnecessary when fishing murky water like we have up here is that true?

If you're fishing murky or stained water leaders are unnecessary. If you're fishing clearer water with reaction baits such as crankbaits and spinnerbaits leaders are optional. With slower moving lures like Jigs, t-rigs, wacky rigs a fluoro or mono leader will help with line visibility. the use of leaders also depends on personal preference

If you are looking at braid I would suggest kastking, power pro, suffix 832, or daiwa j braid. Kastking is very cheap and can be had on ebay or amazon

I have never used a mono of that strength.  I rarely use anything over 14, to be honest. As far as a bait caster, though, I use a lot of KastKing products - they are not very expensive, but they are good reels. Maybe start with a Royale Legend, which is less than $40. 

As for the line, I use a lot of braid, and I think that makes learning easier because it doesn't have the line memory that mono does.  Most of the braid I use is 50 lb or 65 lb.  I agree with others the mono you have will give you a lot of problems. Of course, braid will not break if you get it hung somewhere while fishing, so some people use mono or a mono leader at least.  That way they don't wind up losing a bunch of line that they have to cut off or something.

Good luck with the learning process.  Using a bait caster can be a little tough at first, but stick with it and you'll get used to it.

I love spinnerbaits and floating rattlers, so what's not to like. I ordered 7 to get free shipping. I'll give my buddy one each in three colors and I'll keep the other four. They're due at my door Monday evening. Now, which trailer, the 4" or the 6" grub?  

 

I've never heard of a dancing eel. Maybe I don't spend as much time on line as I think I do. Used some live eels for striper/rockfish fishing in the bay and red surgical tube on wire for bluefish, but no dancing eels.
