Tatula SV TW........opinions?

Late last night in a moment of weakness, the Bait Monkey overpowered me and I ordered the above reel in 8.1:1.  Doesn't seem to be much out there about the reel yet except for pros plugging it.  Anyone have some real (reel?) on the water experience with one?  Hope I have better out-of-the-box luck with it than my first SV reel.

 

Now I have to deliberately surrender to the Bait Monkey so I can get a new rod or two.

I love mine. I actually purchased for skipping docks but it has slowly become one of my favorite reels.  At first it took some getting used to but now I enjoy using it.  Very very smooth reel

I bought it for skipping docks too. It takes some time, which I'm still working on, to get it working right. I tried it in a tournament day. Put it down after a few minutes because I didn't want to waste time. I hope to get some time with it soon. I just haven't been on the water enough lately.

Just curious but is this a coincidence or is there a reason this reel is chosen for skipping?

The sv braking system is why...it is on at all times...

All the SVs you're only supposed to tighten the cast control just enough to eliminate side to side play in the spool, and rely on break dial. Because this SV is on a pinion I'm interested to see if it is that same concept.

It is still recommended by the manufacturer to only set the spool tension enough to eliminate play.  It is essentially "set it an forget it"

 

I can echo the others comments as I have also been enjoying mine.  With the brakes set up correctly you can skip docks without even thumbing it.  I have yet to have a backlash other than once when I got a lure caught in tree that was behind me on the cast.

I love mine! The other day, my friend wanted to try his own type of texas rig so he found the lightest senko style plastic I have ever seen and put it on.  It felt like nothing when weighed in my hand and was the same length as the 3/0 hook he put it on.  Weightless, it still casted about 20 feet which shocked me.  Casts anything beautifully.

I love mine. It can cast lightweight lures decently, but it can really launch heavy ones nicely as well. In retrospect, I am glad I spent the extra money for the SV over the CT.

It takes a little bit of getting used to if you are accustomed to the reg CT.  I was actually a little disappointed but I took it out tonight and tweaked it a little bit and I've gotten much better results.   

 

For me I don't know if there is enough noticeable difference to purchase an SV over a standard CT.

Wasn't expecting the reel to arrive until Tuesday given the time frame from Japan Tackle.  It was waiting for me when I got home from work yesterday.  Nice looking reel.  Had to mount it on a rod to see how it felt.  Great.  Now to pick a line and a rod for it.  Out-of-the-box my SV105 backlashed more than any other reel I own.  Set it up per videos.  Posted here and tried suggestions.  Reel wound up going to Ian and is a different animal now.  Hopefully this reel will not need to be sent out.

I have a Tatula SV and easiest reel to skip, casting is a breeze too. You won't be disappointed in this reel at all. I bought it off hype and have never regretted.

I agree, great reel. Liked it so much I bought another. Can't believe how well it casts. I was expecting the pinion spool to slow it down a little but it may be the best cast reel (out of the box) that I've ever owned. Just bombs heavier lures

Got out for a bit this afternoon with it.  Have to agree with Nathan...not about the skipping because I didn't try to skip...but casting is a breeze.  I don't understand why some feel it takes some time to dial in or get use to.  Removed side-to-side play.  Set brake dial at 8.5.   Absolutely no problem.  Not one over-run.  Casting distance wasn't spectacular...only average.  Maybe that is what others mean by taking some time to dial in and get use to.  However, before I had to quit, casting distance had already increased....without any changes being made to the reel settings.  I assume a little break-in helps.  Spooled with 12# McCoy Mean Green.  My first time using this line.  Mounted on a 7' MF Helios.  The combo feels great in hand.

 

Some suggest setting baitcast reels up by adjusting the cast control tension tight enough so the lure falls slowly with no more than one turn by the spool after the lure stops falling.  I don't think that is necessary with these reels.  Lure drops like a rocket.  I didn't feel any "fluffing" and remember this is new line.

I noticed that my cast control knob is really hard to turn either way.  Is anyone else noticing this?  Wondering if something may be wrong with the reel.  It works fine and the adjustments to the knob work but it's really difficult to turn compared to all of my other reels.

My cast control knob is the same way.

new2BC4bass  if you want the distance you need to loosen that reel up. Add just a touch of side play to the spool and trust the reel to do its job.  All of the Tat line is that way.  The Tatulas do not adjust like any other reel on the market period!

Will the next time I am out.  Yard work tonight after work, but maybe there will still be enough time to head on down to the Lehigh for some practice.
