blckshirt98 Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 I just want to say that after using hooks from pretty much every brand out there, the Lazer Trokar hooks are the best hooks I've used so far. I've had Gamakatsu and Trapper hooks break, Owner and Mustads bend. I put off on trying the Trokar hooks for the longest time because they're expensive and made by Eagle Claw, and I have a brand bias against Eagle Claw (Eagle Claw = "first rod" you get for the kids). I got a few packs of Trokars at the Dick's sale a few months back and they've performed flawlessly. Penetration on hooksets have been perfect, and recovered hooks that had gotten snagged/hung-up, where other hooks would have broken/bent, have come back to me with points intact and no noticeable bending in the hook. If I could trade my stock of Gammy/Owner/Mustad hooks for Trokars I would in a heartbeat, I've been that impressed with them. 1 Quote
BrackishBassin Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 Have you had issues with them eating up plastics? I've avoided using any of the 'chisel point' (for lack of a better descriptor) hooks because I'm concerned they'd cut through and tear up plastics. Interested to hear your take on it. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 11, 2017 Super User Posted July 11, 2017 My only gripes with Trokars are I seem to have bad luck with the points rolling (specifically on spinnerbaits) and texposing hooks becomes more difficult as the hook will actually slice through the thin layer of plastic you stick the tip under. 1 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 Good, seriously sharp hooks, but will tear apart your plastics quick. I used them for a while but switched to Owner twist locks. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 11, 2017 Super User Posted July 11, 2017 Been fishing Mustard for 50+ years, caught dozens of double digit bass on Mustad's Denny Brauer Straight Shank Flipping Hook. Never had one break & aint never bent one! Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 I've heard of guys breaking hooks, but often wondered what exactly one has to do to break a hook? I've been fishing 60 years and never broken a hook and trust me when I say there's a reason I warn my co-angler when I'm about to set the hook when fishing soft plastics or jigs. I've broken a couple of rods setting the hook on things that don't swim, but never a hook. Just wondering. I've used both the flipping and tube Trokar hooks and yes, they are sharp and strong and there are situations where that is exactly what I want from a hook. As far as expense goes, a tungsten weight is expensive, so is fluorocarbon line, but they're worth it, IMO. 2 Quote
sully420 Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 I've never broken a hook i find the major brands all sell good hooks that get the job done. I buy the trokar surgically sharpened flipping hooks for punching hevy cover because they do slice through the plastic easly. And i buy the eagle claw regular point flipping hooks when in using less than 3/4oz weight witch seems to prevent the hook from slicing the fished mouth and sliding out. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 11, 2017 Global Moderator Posted July 11, 2017 As I've been saying on here for years, I've been useing the TK 130 probably since they first came out. Yes, they will tear up a plastic when trying to tex pose and that is where they get the bad rap. Solution... Don't do it. When you bring the hook point up, stop before you penetrate the top. No need to tex pose a Trokar Mike Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted July 11, 2017 Super User Posted July 11, 2017 I use their 2/0 and 3/0 offset worm hooks a ton and love them. They do rip up plastics but I get good hookset ratios and Culprit and Zoom worms are cheap enough that I am fine with burning through them. I am also trying some of their wacky hooks but I crimp my barbs for that presentation and the Trokers are not great for that. 1 Quote
Falkus Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 Been using Trokar for my local tournaments. It has really improved my hookset ratio. It's known to rip the plastics but I rather to attempt a kidnap method . Once I get it, I love giving a "smooshie" kiss before releasing it back Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 12, 2017 Global Moderator Posted July 12, 2017 I prefer those "First rod you get as a kid" hooks over the Trokars by a long shot. Hate how the cut up the bait and the points roll and dull really easily. I use Eagle Claw for most everything and still manage to catch a fish every once in awhile Quote
Doelman Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 I have the trokar weedless wacky hooks and I actually seem to get a better hook up ratio with the gammy weedless wacky hooks. Also put me in the camp of someone that has never broken a hook on a bass, bent? sure, but not broken. I have had a few break in saltwater though. 1 Quote
