i'm shopping around for the best deal on a quality hook and just wondering where you guys look to buy hooks in quantities of 100?  looking to buy these to match up to some lure blanks i'm going to paint.  will likely just buy some size 6 and size 4 to keep it general for the baits that i'm painting.

i don't need the absolute best hook on these, but don't want any garbage either.

so far i've seen:

Mustad 35647BN - 100 count size 6 is $21.38

Mustad TG76 NP-BN Treble Hooks - Black Nickel Kevin VanDam Triple Grip Sizes - 100 count size 6 is $32.20

anyone with any experience on those 2 hooks?  any suggestions on other places to shop?

thanks in advance for any help!

Check out Bustin Bass Baits, they have 100 count treble hooks for just under $10.

man i'd like to, but i tried to get some lure eyes from them and after about a month of back and forth just canceled the order.  not sure what the whole ordeal was there, but it was a bit absurd.

also, i'd love to believe that a deal like $10 for 100 quality hooks exists, but after years of swallowing the "you get what you pay for" pill i feel like they've got to be pretty low quality to be as cheap or even cheaper than comparable BRONZE hooks.

have you ordered and tried these hooks and if so could they compare in quality, durability, sharpness, etc.?

Love this treble.  Unless it's a suspending / weight critical bait, this ones on every treble hook bait in the boat.

Accordingly I purchased a couple of bulk ( 25 - 100 ct ) deals on it.  They arrived without a box or any 'Mustad' packaging of any kind, although they we advertised as such.

Sadly, they did not seem like The Same Hook.  The originals are a definite Black Chrome - every bulk hook I ever purchased seemed sort of bronze and definitely Not the Same Hook.

I no longer purchase them and stick with the Originals.

YMMV

I bought some on the bay the other day thinking I'd just scored the deal of the day, but when I got them they were some bronze garbage....  it's why I'm weary of any that don't seem to fall in line with the other pricing...

Captain hooks is where I buy almost all my hooks from trebles, jig hooks, wacky rig, and worm hooks.

There are more than one KVD Triple grip. Ones you get for cheap are not that great. But when you are selling baits people see that name and think its good.

The KVD's in the smaller packs have a different hook technology and are much better. Opti-angle needlepoint, chemically sharpened, black nickel finish

Dang, need a couple guys in my club to go in on the 1000 pack. $40 for 250 hooks between 4 guys is a steal.

Thanks for showing the site

thanks to everyone on the captain hooks heads up!  i received the hooks last night and the appear to be the real deal and best price i found on them, might be worth looking into @A-Jay

only thing i'm wondering now if i should have got some size 2's as well since they're such a shorter shank and could afford to go up in size....

what's the most common size you guys would use in these particular hooks on say a 1.5 vs 2.5 size crankbait?

Thanks @buzzed bait - I'll definitely check them out.

As for size - for the 1.5's I like 2's on the front & 4's on the back (do the same on a 1/2 RES too)

The 2.5 I go 1's on the front & 2's on the back -

and FYI I'm mostly catching smallies on these baits.

Any experence with this hook or dealer.  Looking for round bends and this seems like a decent deal...

Can't comment on the look but Barlow's Tackle has always been great to deal with.

I've bought a lot of stuff from Barlow, Jann's, and the other big boxes.   Caveat emptor, some of these internet only places aren't very good from what I've encountered.   I stocked up on hooks long ago, so don't have the price problems newer guys may.   I joke I have 5 lifetimes worth, but that's probably conservative.

As far as trebles go, after decades with treble hook issues, I just replace everything with round bend gama's, even new lures.   I use some small eagle claw trebles for certain things and the excaliber on some jerk baits, but go with the best/what works and stick with it when it comes to hooks.  Ok to be frugal in purchasing, but don't save a few pennies and then have to replace them or lose a good fish.   Don't just look at the hooks, look at the split rings too.   I've had pricey lures >$15 that had weak rings on them and they failed on fish.   I like Daiichi hooks better but they have a limited offering.

On lipped CB, I prefer a small front hook and a larger rear hook.   They don't snag up as much coming through cover and hook ups seem to be better, and if they take it inside, the small hook will stay lodged better over a larger one, less leverage to throw it.  Easier to remove.   I over size on small lures as I'm fishing for size over numbers.   Tailor your lure to your quarry.
