Hi all,

I am looking for a finesse baitcaster, that I can also use in the salt every now and then.

Following options are on the table:

http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_SV ... -D5SV.html

https://japanlureshop.com/abu-revo-mgxt ... 14221.html

https://japanlureshop.com/shimano-15-al ... -9213.html

Use would be:

Weightless worms, Wacky rigs, Ned rigs, Small Jigs and Small jerkbaits

Thoughts are welcome!

Thanks!

I have the REVO MGX (not the extreme) for weightless worms. It took a bit to adjust, but once I did, it worked very well. Very nice reel.

I like the fact that the SV105 can officially be used for the salt as well. The Aldebaran is eligble as well according to the website here http://fish.shimano.com/content/sac-fish/en/home/products/fishing-reels/baitcast/aldebaran.html

The MGX Extreme is not.

I am wondering if it is worth to pay another 100 USD to get the Aldebaran over the SV105...

Only your bait monkey could answer that question. :D

Check the drag spec for your application.  The sv105 might not do what you want for salt.  Most of the sv reels will work for what you want just have to find a saltwater safe version.  If you find a zillion coastal and put a lighter spool in it, may do what you want.

I have the sv105 and it works great for the lures you listed.  My only complaint is the small handle.

Cool!

HAve you tried the Aldebaran before? What are you mainly using the reel for, what are the list of cons and pros that you would list?

Thanks for your input!

I haven't used the aldebaran...too rich for me, as I got a good deal on the sv105.  Although, I haven't heard a bad thing about that reel and it's hard to go wrong with a higher end shimano. TW used to let you try reels out before you buy.  I don't know if that's still the case or not.

As far as pros and cons...i don't really have anything bad to say about the sv105 (except the small handle).  Performs perfect for weightless and ned rigs.  I also throw micro hollow body frogs with it.  The drag is smooth, it casts great, and handles heavier lures well too.  I prefer it to my chronarch 50.

Just make sure you pair it with a rod that is designed to accomplish what you're looking for.  I've heard people complain about the sv105, expecting it to cast 1/16 oz lures 50 yards while paired with their flipping stick.

I had the chance to play a bit around with a SV105 while fishing on Saturday, I compared the reel against my Lew's Team Pro Speed Spool. Long story short. I was very disappointed in the Daiwa. Not only could I throw a light Ned rig (1/8) faster with the Lew's it was also much more effortless. Also got a could amount of backlashes with the SV.

So, I am going to stick with the Lew's as my semi-finesse baitcaster and continue to use Spinning for super finesse.

Thanks for all your guys' input.

Thanks

We are a minority of two.  My SV105 backlashed more than any other reel I own.  I watched videos on this reel and posted about my problem with it.  Nothing helped.  Sent it to Ian.  Only had it out once, but zero backlashes that time out.  He mentioned I will need a bit of time to get used to it, but will be very pleased once I do.  I have found that to be true with a couple other reels.  I needed to spend a little time getting use to them before being able to get the best out of them.  Once to that point I seem to be able to switch among the different reels without any problems.  Some can't (or won't take the time to learn the other reels) so they stick with one brand.

That's weird?  I've never had any issue with backlash on that reel.  Admittedly, it took some time getting used to the feel of the sv spool but now I Iove it.  I hope you find what you're looking for.

The funny thing is, is that I never really liked the feel of my brother's lews reels.

To each their own I guess.  Good luck!

If you end up with the aldebaran, let us know how like it.

My fishing partner uses Quantum Smoke Inshore PT 100 reel and impressed how light it is and casting performance with light weight lures. I wouldn't over look this reel!

Thanks guys! Will keep my eyes open. Since a rod broke yesterday, the money needs to move to the rod replacement anyways. Lets see one day.. ;)

If you are backlashing with the SV 105 you likely have an inductor issue.

Okuma Cerros throws light lures like a champ and Okuma handles salt water really well. It compares favorably to the Lews LFS and other reels I have that were more money. It looks identical to the calera but has better bearings, super light and good drag etc. Lots of good reals for finesse, I find most low profile reels can handle heavy or light lures if set right.

If you step up to the Helios or the Komodo you will cast light lures without any issues as the settings are simple. I like the Daiwa T3 since it is designed with saltwater bearings, I am pretty sure the curado is saltwater ready so are the Revo's.

Since Okuma is known as a saltwater first company, I tend to buy them the most since I use all my reels in fresh and salt. The Komodo may not be saltwater I would check, The ss komodo is for saltwater or fresh, reel is expensive but awesome. That is my next reel when I "Need" One.

Lew's Mach II is what I use, but I am looking to upgrade to the Daiwa Tatula SV.
