bassinick Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Hey guys, looking to get a new reel in 280$ range it's down to 2 now the Shimano chronarch mgl or the lews tlm1h magnesium, the main thing I'm looking for is casting distance cause I am a pond bank angler and I need to reach it out there sometimes, if any of you guys could give me input it would help a lot, or if you suggest another reel in hat range that works too, currently on way to bass pro to see.. d-camarena Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Im a 100% lews guy and even i would say get the shimano at that price point. But for diatance i wouldnt go that high in budget. My lews mach speed spool bombs lures. My superduty also casts very far 1 Quote

Super User fishballer06 Posted July 5, 2017 Super User Posted July 5, 2017 Another vote for the Chronarch. Mine will bomb a Baby 1- with 12lb. mono and a proper rod for the job (like Raul said). 1 Quote

I would have to agree the rod has a lot to do with it. For the most part, that is where I would concentrate. But, at the same time, if you're looking for a beast of a reel with a deep spool that helps that "cast a mile" goal, the KastKing Spartacus Maximus comes in under $100.... leaves you some cash for a better rod! Just a thought. Quote
Derrick Parker Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 I was in the same boat as you 3 weeks ago and decided on the shimano and haven't been disappointed since. It bombs lures, very smooth, love the reel. 1 Quote
MDbassin Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Bank fisherman are always trying cast farther away from the bank and Boat fisherman are always trying to get closer to the bank..... don't worry about distance find a spot and cast parallel to the bank. But to answer your question I purchased 2 Chronarch MGLs a few weeks ago and have put them three there paces and I have nothing bad to say about them possibly the best reel purchase I ever made. And dare I say quite possibly the best overall reel ever made. You get Metanium like performance($400 some reel) And "workhorse" reel durability for a great price. I do like lews also but it seems that the higher end lews reels just feel more fragile and plastic toy feeling to me I own 2 tournament pro g reels and I'm afraid to do anything with them sure they are lightweight but they feel more like toys. Shimano and Daiwa always feel more solid to meill take an extra ounce of weight on my reel if it makes it feel more solid Quote
offsidewing Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 The Chronarch fo sho. Another option is to go to Japan Lure Shop and order the JDM Shimano Metanium MGL. Shipped airmail to your door for about $310. No customs issues or anything like that with reels. Its a 70 sized spool so you'll "only get" about 300 feet of 12lb fluoro on it. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 I agree about the rod statement. I would go with a better rod and maybe look for a cheaper reel and maybe add better bearings and get a full deep cleaning from DVT. (That new Curado K that is coming out looks great!) My personal application is this. I use Quantum EXO's with Powell Endurance rods. I can throw pretty far using my Endurance 723C, but I'm at my rods hook setting limits. So, if I go 10 more feet it would not matter to me. But, it's your $$. At that price point, I really doubt you're going to get a dud. I would ask yourself which reel feels better in your hand and go with that one. Good luck! Wdy Quote
