The worst one is spooled with a 12lb. Big Game mono base of about 30yds. and the bulk of the line is Seaguar Invizx 12lb. fluorocarbon. The next one looks better although still slightly uneven and that has a 30yd base of Big Game mone and the rest is Sunline Shooter Armilo Defier 17lb., The one with braid looks fine although to me it seems like the sales clerk didn't get enough braid on, again it has 30yd Big Game mono base with the rest being Sunline FX2 50lb. braid. She only got 75yds. of braid on plus the 30yds of mono base...that's only 105yds. of total line on a Daiwa tatula CT Type R which supposedly holds 160yds. of 12lb. mono but she showed me the spool and it looked pretty full, she asked if I wanted her to continue putting line on but I didn't want her to over-fill it so had her stop there.

If i had to guess I'd suspect that the knot between the two 12# lines created a bump and caused the issue. Check that to see that it's as slim a knot as you can get.

Just a side note, when I first loathe a real, I use VERY little,Ono backing and load the balance with braid.  After that, when the braid needs to be changed, I pull off 100 yards and tie to the remaining only braid.  Makes for a nice smooth spool and OK other are very small

I have always used a blood knot to join backing line to main line for decades without any issues. You are better off using inexpensive 15# Dacron braid as backing op for your reels, it's about 1/2 the weight of mono line.

Do you need tape to keep it from slipping or does the stretch of the main line prevent that? I've only used Dacron backing on fly reels.

when joining braid backing to braid main I use a 4 wrap uni to uni and please a piece of scotch tape over the knot......smooth sailing from then on...

She used a modified Albright knot to join the lines as I Googled it and they said that was one of the best joining knots.

She was right it is a good knot. I always use a 5 turn uni to uni but that is what a guide taught me years ago and it works.  As for backing mono is the way to go. One of the reasons to use a backing line on a baitcaster is to avoid braided lines slipping on the arbor. Mono eliminates that, especially if you tie the mono on with a uni knot. It will not slip like an ordinary arbor knot can.

No, the spools have holes that you tie the line through, otherwise a wrap of electrical tape shoukd work to prevent slipping.

Looks good Glenn and I will purchase this for future endeavors but these reels have already been spooled now and at least 1 was spooled badly and i have to re-spool it so people have suggested i tie the line off somewhere and walk it out and then rewind it evenly.

Okay, I did what you guys said to do. Went to the local high school soccer field (which is right next door to where I work), tied one end of my line to the goal post and walked it out. Know what I found? The girl had tied her spool knot through two holes in my spool on the left hand side :stupid:. Know wonder why it was stacked like a sno-cone to the left...grrrrr. So I tied a double arbor knot around the spool, set the drag back and started to reel in, below is a picture of my spooling job...I think i did a much better job if I do say so myself, what do you guys think? Now I'm thinking I will have to do this to each of the other two reels as well...if she screwed up the spool knot on this one I'm thinking there's a good chance she may have done it on the other's too :wall3:.

It was a simple thing to do once you do it. Sometimes we OVERTHINK things. That looks perfect.  Now you are ready for some casing practice. Take the 734 add a 1/2 jig an trailer and go get some casing practice in.  You will be landing fish soon!

I realize that is on your cranking rod. You can practice cast a jig onit as well.

Remember to reset the drag so the reel will perform correctly.

It doesn't matter what kind of knot you use or how many holes you go through. Had you left the knot and followed the process the result would be the same. Just go fishing, you are making it way too difficult.
