Cmath06 Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 (edited) Hey all, I just returned from a local pond near my house. While I was there, I saw heaps of trash and a family fishing. While I openly welcome new people to fishing, it is very annoying when you see a teenager catch a bass and then leave it on the bank until his dad comes to take the fish off the hook. As a younger angler, in what ways can I help teach people younger than me how to handle fish once caught? Also I want to hear the things that annoy you when at a lake or pond. Edit: I didn't think my post would blow up but thanks for all the great replies. On another note, the story of the post has really annoyed me even more. I went back to the pond today and found a dead fish with a hook still in it's mouth. This was the fish that the dad cut the line on, which upsets me because the father who is teaching the kids doesn't know how to handle fish. Edited July 2, 2017 by Cmath06 Update the Story 2 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 My current biggest gripe is guys who fish from the docks at busy public access sites. I'm not talking about the guys who may make a few casts and leave, but the clowns who show up with chair, tackle box, rods and cooler and just get right in the way of people launching and loading their boats. They are not public fishing piers, they are there for the boaters use. Approaching any stranger and attempting to educate them in proper practice is usually a BAD idea these days. 9 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 Education is all in approach. Willing to give up a few worms and hooks most young anglers will listen as they catch fish and learn your ways. Money and time are both valuable but its an investment in the care of our sport and will get there attention without causing all the problems. Catch them with honey not a stick 2 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 My nature is to fish as far as possible from other people. I'm with people constantly at work, home, church, the community. So I'm usually alone or with one other person when I bass fish.I fish mostly small lakes that get little pressure. So people rarely bother me. My biggest aggravation is knots in my line, because I fish soft plastics a lot.Just had a big one yesterday in my "work " combo. 2 Quote
BCline Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Jet Skis have to be at the top of my list. They are loud and ALWAYS have to get close to see if you are catching anything, which of course you aren't because of all the racket made by the stupid jet ski. 8 Quote

Sadly....:)...all across the states fish are being sacrificed in limited numbers for kids and others who have very limited knowledge of what is entailed to catch and release and or eat their catch. Look and see how kids grab fish or drag em up the bank while they smile and giggle and look on in amazement....it's all part of the learning curve. Another one of my favorites is the trout angler who puts his fish on a stringer in the warm water at the surface either by the bank or in a boat and then try's to cook this soft flesh and wonders why it doesn't taste so good. But anyway...good thing the good Lord has made a lot of them fishes...so they can put up with "all" our expertise's. 1 Quote

PaFrogThrower9 Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Kayaks. Nothing against kayaks in general cause we have a couple, but 90% of the people i run into on the lake in kayak has little to know care about anyone but themselves. 6 Quote

Super User Scott F Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 Fishing pressure. I know it's a fact of life for most of you but I arrange my fishing to avoid places where there are tons of other fishermen. In the spring, there are very few bass fishermen on the lakes I fish and in the summer, I stick to rivers where I seldom see anybody. 7 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Well aside from too much wind, it's other people. Maybe it's just my Northeast attitude, but I don't want to talk to strangers when I'm fishing. "Hey, how they biting?" or "Beautiful day isn't it?" I get people are just trying to be nice but internally I'm thinking "GO AWAY!" 9 Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 All other people annoy me. How dare they go fishing at the same time and place as me! That really grinds my gears!!! Really, if someone mishandles a fish that's a pretty minor offense. It's a fish. Most ponds have too many for the good of the pond anyway. You can try to explain it once, but if they aren't listening, let it go. Plenty of fish in the sea, so to speak. I don't like the bucket brigade asking me for my fish. They can take all the eyeballs they want but I'll do what I'll do with them regardless of their desire for more meat. I had a guy ask me if I was going to throw back a trophy size fish once and I let it go in front of him for spite and said "Yep." Later learned the guy was trespassing, sneaking in by driving on a pipeline right of way. He had permission once but it was revoked. Don't know specifics. Trespassers annoy me. If the aforementioned bucket brigadier had followed the rules, he would not have been banned. 1 Quote
