What unwanted intrusions?  All I see are forum posts from people complaining that they can't get in.  The show is for industry insiders.  And where is being advertised?  Again, from what I can tell, forums, like ours are promoting and sharing what is there, as are popular online retailers.  What is also happening is retailers conducting business with manufacturers.  It is a way to bring many makers together with many sellers, all at once.  This can't happen in an environment where 10,000 Joe Fishermans are asking about the new 122.75 size Whopper Plopper.

Like I said, as long as there is a large national show that IS open to the average Joe which has all the major vendors with their new products and the Pro personalities that many regular fishermen are a fan of then I don't have any problem with ICAST being exclusive. This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth :).

Bassmaster Classic, anyone?

Cool, now i know. I don't follow the professional tournaments much so I wouldn't know that but I'm glad there is an opportunity for the public to meet and greet the Pros and see all of the big name vendors and their new wares. Since that is the case I would side with Glenn on keeping ICAST geared towards a place for vendors to network with people on the inside of the fishing industry!

Every industry has exclusive shows like iCast.

I know around here there are three or four outdoor/sportsman/hunting/fishing shows through the winter that are open to the public.

I'm my area we have outdoor/fishing/hunting/boat shows. There's about 4-5 different ones from winter thru March. All of them unfortunately have turned into a flea market with nothing but junk and crap unrelated to what the show is all about. When I was a kid they were a ton better. Oh well. If you look at Bassmaster you can see a lot of the new products at ICAST. Saves me the money to travel and dealing with a ton of people.

Well this is what I have learned; about 25 % of guys here buy 95% of the reels, rods and tackle, the other 75% catch all the fish

A lot of the big named vendors in the bass fishing and I'd say freshwater fishing world have 2 big shows every year. ICAST and the Bassmaster Classic. There are only 52 ish? Guys that fish the classic so there are a ton of pros that do work for their sponsors and companies at the expo. The expo keeps getting bigger and bigger every year, and I'm pretty sure it's free.

It's just your opinion, but keep in mind they keep this site afloat.

And here I was thinking that it was Glenn's big wheeling amongst all the lowlife V-loggers at icast keeping this place up and running! ;)

As for Savage Gear, yes, they do come out with some flops, but they do have a solid lineup of quality baits.

I had looked at the time and they were the same.  Wouldn't be first time TW published incorrect info and changed it.

I have been watching some YouTube live vids from the event and am very excited about some of the products I have seen.

i am usually in Orlando at this time of year for vacation but my family and I decided to take a break from Disney this year. Just as well as I would not have been able to get into Icast as a fishing fanboy.

Im dissapointed in this years icast. Improbably. I was expecting-

1. Lews ledge heavy spinning rod

2. Yum to bring back the 7 inch senko

3. Huddleston magnum bluegill

4. Teckel magnum frog

5. Keitech swing impact fat in 6 or 7 inch

None of those were brought.

Only thing im interested is the livetarget bluegill swimbait. But i really dislike livetarget lures so i might not even get it

@Glenn the tone of your post comes across as pretty elitist.  Why shouldn’t anyone who qualifies to buy a ticket be allowed to participate?  The rules are on ICAST’s site, and ultimately ICAST gets to decide who is allowed in.

I think the issue is, sadly, that ICAST became such a phenomenon in the press and among the youtube anglers (who most of like to think are 'just guys' like us) that we no longer understand its purpose.  That's what Glenn's getting at.

There are TONS of outdoors shows where vendors will display and sell their wares to us (the consumers).  However, ICAST is intended to be a time of vendors to make contacts, build relationships, and sell product to THEIR DEALERS.  The whole purpose here is about the BUSINESS of angling which, of course, most of us aren't really a part of that.

Glenn's point is that the more people are there just to gawk (like I would), the less space/time/resources the people running businesses that cater to fisherman - like Glenn's website, the rod/reel manufacturers, bait companies - have to make contacts that build their business.

Again, this is a monster of their own creation, but that's what it is.  As a person who works in the tech industry, I always want to go to CES to see new gadgets but that's not really the purpose of that event. I went one year (because I work for someplace that gives me an entry) and I quickly realized that, while I loved seeing all the toys, I was in the way of the business that was supposed to be happening there.  I paid my dime, so I wasn't too upset and didn't stop... But, I also didn't go back.

Here is my two cents.

If this show were truly a dealer show, they should not be allowing the media, or just handle their own media through social media. The media is also their just gawking and potentially getting in the way of dealers that want to get in and make contacts with existing or new companies and place orders.

My guess if they did just that they might not get enough people to the show, so at some point they started to open it up. Have they opened it up too far, who knows, and probably depends on who you ask.

As as for the local regional shows, I have been to a couple and as some have stated, most big companies aren't there and obviously no new products aren't there, as somebody said it is like a flea market with some nice boats thrown in, a waste of time and I no longer go.

My background is the RC Plane/car world where their big show is open to the public, but they don't allow the companies to sell products directly at the show. The only buying and selling goes on in the swap meet and auction. I would guess the fishing tackle industry is bigger in number of anglers, not sure on the money part though. It could be done.

as some has said the real problem is how they market the thing and how all the new products hit the web. How do people that go not expect us bait monkey bit people not to want to go, we want to see all the new stuff too and maybe do a side trip to Disney World;)
