SCkayakfisher Posted June 28, 2017 Posted June 28, 2017 Hey all, for fathers day I gave my dad a certificate to get a rod and reel so that we can fish together. The limitations are spinning only and an absolute max budget of $150. We would mostly be targeting LMB's, medium sized stripers, flounder, and possibly sea trout. What suggestions do y'all have? Outdoor Zack Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Lures or bait? for bait, I would say that a ugly stick is good enough. Pair it with a nice reel (look at Abu G. and Shimano to get started) Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted June 29, 2017 Super User Posted June 29, 2017 what store was the gift certificate for? that might help narrow it down to what that place carries... Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 29, 2017 Super User Posted June 29, 2017 Definitely go with a Pflueger President - probably a #6930 size. Match that up with a 7' Berkley "Shock" spinning rod in Medium action. You can get him a spool of 10# test PowerPro braid and a spool of 8# test fluorocarbon (for leader material) and you're good to go. All within your budget. 1 Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 President reel and a St. Croix Bass X rod. Check out American Legacy fishing they will send you a $25 discount code if you sign up on the mailing list. Dobyns Fury would be a good choice also. Quote
Subaqua Adinterim Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Look at the Pflueger President Combo. DSG has this combo on sale right now. You can get the one piece rod in 6' or 7' length, or the two piece set up if that is what you prefer. The rods are light weight IM8 graphite with nice cork handles and line guides as well as a hook keeper. I recently tried out the 6' rod combo on my kayak and was quite impressed. These are a very good value for the price ( approx. $60). Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 Since you said bass striper and some flounder my suggestion would be Pflueger President 6935 ( slightly more line capacity and a bit better drag). That reel is on sale at Dicks Sporting Goods and there is currently a $10 rebate as well. That means the cost will end up being around $40 for a reel that normally sells for $60. Now I would look for an Abu Garcia Veritas 7 foot medium heavy spinning rod. This will cost $80 from either a local shop or ordered online from a company like Tackle Warehouse. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and fish its rivers, so I do fish for bass and stripers. I am confident that combo would work good for all of your dad's needs to begin with. It would also fit in your budget. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 30, 2017 Super User Posted June 30, 2017 I would look at inshore rods. The guides are stainless and the rod will last a lot longer. I fish a lot of st croix and i know they have an inshore series but i have yet to fish them. My second big fear would be reel being saltwater safe. I have had a president in the past but dont know how well it would take the salt. There are versions of the zillion and the advantage that i have used that are salt safe. You may be able to find a 3000 series advantage spinning reel that would be great. Quote
