Hello everyone I am in the twin cities area of Minnesota and went fishing for the 1st time in almost 20  years this past weekend and remembered how much i live fishing. Growing up i never specifically fished for bass just fished to fished unless i was trolling for walleye pike or musky. My dad and i would also gp out to his boat on lake michigan and fish salmon and trout. Anyways im a 37 non boater that wants to learn to bass fish and to get good at it. I currently own no tackle or rod i did go out and buy a Daiwa rg2500ab. Need advice on a rod line and tackle along with good areas to bank fish and to eventually meet boaters to fish with. I am willing to drive up to 2 hrs away to fish.

Budget would help as far as gear.

7' Medium-Heavy, Fast action rod is a nice jack of all trades type you can use for a baitcasting setup... i throw weightless senkos on mine...

Since you are getting into it im giessing your using a spinning rod.

I use an old spinning rod myself, a medium-light fast action 2 piece and some old quantum reel, 6'6" long.

AREAS

I would pick coves, close to dams, mouths of creeks, and throw at cover. I've always been told to look for breaklines in terrain, structure, or shade.

All things depend on conditions. Start off worming, i think its one of the best beginner lures!

Good luck.

Hey, I have been bass fishing in the twin cities area for around 6 years so I know a couple good spots. In the early season lake Harriet has a ton of good bass fishing along the shore. But in Minny the weeds get extremely thick in the summer so try techniques like a top water frog and punching. In the summer I like cedar lake because it has lily pads covering its entire shore, and the bass will be accessible from the bank (in Harriet they go too deep). Also, if you have a boat lake Minnetonka is hands down the best bass fishing in the state. Good luck!

Welcome! New to the community and fishing myself as well. I enjoy top water fishing for bass with bait like hollow body frogs. Top water fishing is obviously a blast and the thrill of the topwater blowup and fights is hard to beat... I quickly learned that if you're having trouble and want to produce bites and pull fish in always resort to weedless plastic like Senkos.

Happy fishing!

As a newer angler like yourself I don't have too much experience under my belt - anyways here is my two cents. I have two Abu Garcia Veritas rods (combined with Abu Garcia reels) and they currently fit all of my needs. I would recommend a 7' to 7'6". The latter will really help if you are a long distance caster. These rods on average run around $70 and you won't regret it. If you're on a budget their are some cheaper Abu Garcia rods like the Vengeance and Berkley makes a decent cheap rod known as the Lighting Rod. You should probably aim for medium to medium-heavy, fast action rod like NiX recommended above, this rod will provide an all around versatile setup.

Oh yeah... and try to avoid combo setups and purchase your rods and reels independent of each other.

That is what i am doing i will never buy a combo. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Also am i ok with a spinning reel  or do i need to get a baitcaster right away.

Nope.  Plenty of guys up here use spinning only.  Baitcasting does make using heavier lines, and fishing heavy cover easier.  It's something you'll want to learn as you progress.

That combo should treat you well, you can't go wrong with Abu Garcia's Veritas series rods.

A 7' to 7'6" Medium Heavy, Fast Action rod that is... because of it's versatility.

Pretty popular rod. Cabella's, Bass Pro Shops, even Dick's Sporting Goods has carried them. You could also order from Tackle Warehouse.
