Ohiopondfisher Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I've been using weightless trick worms and shakey head worms with 10lb Berkeley big game line and I've had numerous break offs in light wooded cover and when fishing rock piles I barely have to pull and I break off. Should I switch line size or go to a different line? Quote
bigturtle Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 barely pull and break? sounds like your knot is bad 3 Quote
spokey9 Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I've had issues with big game in the past. It's not very abrasion resistant once you get a stretch on it and bg is a line with a lot of stretch. Last year was the last year I used bg because I started noticing swings in the qc. Some spools would be pretty good, other spools would break in strange places. Between all the different fisheries I take part in and my OCD about changing my line, I can easily burn through 18 1/4 spools of mono a year. I'm using pline cxx now, it's only a couple bucks more per 1/4 spool and it's a lot more abrasion resistant. 1 Quote
d-camarena Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I doubt its the line although id step it up to 12lb on casting gear. Bg has very good knot strength. Check your drag and the knot. 3 Quote
BassGirl71 Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 I agree with the others that it sounds like your knot is the problem. Braid and rock do not always mix well, but it sounds like you are having different problems. Also, I never go lighter than 15-lb., but that's just personal preference. I would start by checking your knot to be sure that isn't where the issue is starting. 3 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted June 27, 2017 Super User Posted June 27, 2017 Are the breaks at the knot or prior to the knot? How old is the line, has it been out in the sun... It could be a bunch of reasons for breaks. and Popularity of big game is that it is inexpensive and wally world carries it. 10 lb is plenty big enough, but there are better mono's on the market. Personally I use 10 kb braid with leader and love it. I witness more mono breaks than any other line 2 Quote

I change my line all the time since it comes in a big spool but it still seems like it breaks from minimal pressure and I'm positive my knot is not the problem Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted June 27, 2017 Super User Posted June 27, 2017 I am definitely not the best at tying knots, but I can tell you that I have thrown Trilene Big Game 12lb into some moderately thick rocks and weeds and more often than not, always got my lures back. Obviously, I am not throwing it into anything too excessively thick, as it's only 12lb mono. If you are constantly throwing a weightless worm or shaky head into cover, 10 or 12lb is appropriate. You could also try a different line but I'm not really sure it will buy you too much to be honest, and you may end up changing your line a whole lot less or paying a whole lot more. It's worth a shot and if you find maybe Trilene XT is working that much better for you, then continue to use it. I would not recommend Trilene XL however, as I once had to replace 12lb Big Game with 14lb XL (horrible bird's nest) and the 14lb is probably half as strong at best. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 27, 2017 Super User Posted June 27, 2017 Bad mouthing a product without knowing what the problems is doesn'tcsolvecany issues. 10 lb mono in good condition should break by pulling on lure with your rod. Simple test is wrap some line around you hands and snap your hands apart, if the breaks easily it's bad line that has either been over heated, stored in sun light or damaged in some manner. I have caught a lot of DD bass using Big Game 10# mono, it's not the line unless it's gone bad for some reason. Line is cheap, change it with fresh line from a new spool. Practice knot tieing; both the Palomar and Trilene knot works good with mono lines. Tom 3 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 28, 2017 Super User Posted June 28, 2017 Like WRB I've caught dozens of double digit bass on Berkley Big Game! There is no mono more abrasion resistant than Big Game...period! I fish Toledo Bend a lot & you would be hard pressed to find a lake with more timber; I've had no issues with abrasion resistance. The key to fishing wood is to move that fish quickly, ya wanna turn that head on the hook set & get her coming towards you. Many anglers choose line based on technique when they should be selecting it based on intended cover they are fishing. I throw weightless plastics on 15# Big Game with a bait caster. 3 Quote
