What's the deal with Okuma

So I've been watching Scott Martin on the tube lately and he's a big Okuma believer, why is it that I haven't heard of and read one thing about anything Okuma here on B.R?

Okuma is one of his long time sponsors.  They are bigger in the salt water game but it hasn't translater over to bass fishing.

Probably because you haven't been around very long. Their name is mentioned on every page you load in the forms as they are a site sponsor.

After viewing @Glenn's review of the Okuma TCS rods on YouTube, I bought a Frog/Swimbait rod and it chucks a two-ounce swimbait just fine. And as @Bluebasser86 pointed out, it's just fine for jigs, not to mention the big (10-inch to 12-inch) worms that I love to use. Just a thought. Oh, I also like the fairly short rod butt which doesn't threaten to eviscerate me in my kayak!

I have 2 - one TCS Mat Daddy & the Guide Select Swimbait rod. They both perform very well but the swimbait rod is awesome for the $.

The Helios would be the only line of rods I would consider especially if I was wanting something for bottom contact apps.

Never once read that someone recommended an Okuma reel or rod over anything else before. Should have clarified that a bit better.

I own a couple TCS rods, a Cerros reel, RTX spinning reel, Helios and Helios TCS baitcasting reels, as well as several Okuma baitfeeder spinning reels I use for catfish. I've been very pleased with all of them. Nice thing about them, as I've said before, they don't get the love that Shimano, Daiwa, Lew's, or Abu get, so you can find some great deals on them. The TCS rods can be had for right around $100 new any day if you look around a little. I paid just over $100 for my Helios TCS brand new. The RTX is an excellent spinning reel that gets zero attention despite being very light, well put together, and having a higher speed retrieve than a lot of spinning reels on the market. They have excellent customer service if you need anything from them as well.

After I read the OP I did some searching and found a fair amount of reviews and the topic has been discussed........but they clearly don't get mentioned as much as loomis, dobyns, Abu, ect, and seldom to the NOOBS.

 

It would have been better if he had more milage or reworded a post about a sponsor.

 

On a side note, many professionals in many sports and hobbys use gear for financial benifits. Not saying it is the case here, but I have been dealing with equipment sponsors and athletes for 25 yrs.

I can't speak for longevity, but I can highly recommend the Helios Air baitcast reel otherwise.  First cast with it and I said to myself, "Wow.  This thing can cast!"  I own and like reels (and rods) from several brands.  Majority of my reels are Daiwas.  I have to say that I like the Helios Air at least as well...if not better...than several of them.

I was pitching a brushhog in the everglades last month with my Helios 7-6, and after landing a 2 pounder I saw that the blank had snapped just before the tip. Now it's a 7-5.
