does anyone who owns a MGL experience this? it doesnt seem to hurt the perfomance of the reel. it just sounds like a light grinding/rubbing noise when reeling the reel. kinda frustrating for a $325 reel. when i loosen the tension knob up a lot it seems to fix the issue but i would need to keep it very loose.

What size line are you using?  I have had smaller size braid slip between the spool and the reel housing before and it caused a sort of grinding noise while I was reeling.  You might want to back out your line and see if that is the case somewhere down in the spool.

*Edit*

You may also want to pull the centrifugal brake side off and take the spool out to check for any dirt in there.  I would just take a Q-Tip and lightly brush over anything to make sure there isn't any unwanted dirt in the spool area.

Centrifugal brakes!  Sorry for the confusion, I have magnetic brakes on my other baitcaster. ;)

Sounds like a warranty issue.  Call Shimano:

Just bought a brand new JDM Met MGL XG and while installing a worm shaft bearing kit it was apparent that the Main Gear needed grease. Funny there was sufficient grease on pinion shaft itself but not on the pinion gear , so you may want to crack it open and take a peek inside. Have had conversation with others who have experienced the same and yes this kind of thing does happen sometimes. Hope this helps you....

Same here. Saw on TT a few people mention this so opened mine and it was dry.

Did you take it apart and clean it? Shimano tends to over lube their reels so I clean them before I use them. My Metanium MGL is one of the smoothest reels I own but it was a little geary right out of the box before I cleaned it.

i've never taken apart a reel before like that.

IDK if I'd take apart a new high end reel like that without prior experience.  You mention the issue stops when you loosen the tension knob?  I'd try removing the tension cap and putting a dot of oil in there.  I had a mild issue with my Curado out of the box.  Oiled the break drum, flushed the bearings and was about pull the thing apart until I noticed it was dry under the cap.  A half drop of oil solved it.

If that doesn't solve it I'd get in contact with Shimano before taking it apart.  Don't void the warranty if you don't know how to properly break that reel down, even more importantly how to put it back together properly.
