Copies/Knock-offs that are better than the original?

Didn't want to hijack the Senko bulk thread. Some folks recommended knock-offs/copies of Senkos such as the BPS Stick-O and others. Many have come to the conclusion that the original is still the best for many types of lures. Others have found that the knockoffs/copies are just as good if not better. 

 

When it comes to Senkos, I have tried the BPS Stick-O and another one that I can't recall and neither worked nearly as well as the Senko, the sink rate and falling action just wasn't the same. 

 

However, I have found that the KVD Sexy Dawg, which is a knockoff of the Zara Spook is much better than the original for me because it walks much easier. So, in this case the copy/knockoff is better than the original in my experience.

 

 

Any other instances of knock-offs/copies being better than the original?

I haven't found an instance where a knockoff is better, maybe just as good But not better.

Most copies are less expensive than the original and there's a reason.  Some originals are expensive for no reason other than the name on them. I've caught fish on cheap imitations, but I've also paid the price of loosing fish in doing so.

I find Big Bites Baits Trick Stick, Wave Worm Tiki Stick, & Yum Dinger every bit as productive as Yamamoto Senko.

 

To me it's all about rate of fall & all 4 have differentiates rates of fall.

 

I also prefer Zoom Trick Worms over Creme Scoundrel.

Any senko knock off is several times better than GYCB senkos ..... senkos last one fish, knock offs last several fish.

Kalins Lunker grub, surely not the original, but for my money the best grub I have ever used. 

 

On the other thread, in reading comments about Senkos vs knockoffs, my take is they sound like different baits that will fall faster or slower with different movements. Which means the fish will tell you which one is better than day. I hate that style of fishing, so my confidence level would be low with both a knock off and the real thing;) I think many have loyalty/confidence in the original which makes it better for them. 

 

Wanted to throw out the most extreme exemple where the knock off in many eyes is better than a Senko. When Ned rigging a cut ZinkerZ bouyant nature can make it more productive than a Senko. While a Zinkerz is a knock off it fishes completely different than the original due to the properties of the plastic.

There are a lot of bladed jigs (chatterbaits) out there that are better than the original.

Yum Dinger, because of the way I can change the rate of fall. 

 

Slower than a Senko with a very subtle wiggle weightless. As fast, with just as much wiggle as a Senko with a 1/16th oz wacky jig and/or belly weighted hook if t-rigged. More buoyant, they work much better for me on drop shot, shaky head, weighted t-rigs, and c-rigs. More durable, and cheaper.

 

I also think the Havoc Pit Boss is a better beaver style bait than the R.I. Sweet Beaver.....I have no idea if the R.I. beaver was the original though.

The original Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap lipless bait that has been catching big bass for a long time.  

Initially being sold from the back of Mr. Lewis’s old Ford ‘rattletrap’ station wagon in the 1960’s, this iconic lure went on to be one of the best sellers ever. 

So although I’ve caught a bunch of great fish myself with this bait, and will continue to do so, I believe the Strike King Red Eye Shad is just a little bit better. 

I’m not exactly sure if this falls directly into the Knock-off category as these baits, despite both being ‘lippless’, their actions & fall rate are different and what is most likely responsible for each of their individual success.

The vast majority of lures today are copies/knockoffs.  All of the hundreds of different straight tail worms are just copies of the crème wiggle worm, all walking baits are just copies of the Zara spook, all jigs are just copies off of Bob carne's original, etc.  99% of what is in today's market is simply a spinoff with some differences.
