FamilyFishinFood Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 I'm looking for a new "multipurpose" rod/combo that could be used for walking baits, jerkbaits, or small crankbaits; mostly medium sized trebled baits under 1 1/2 oz. Also, do you think a curado 70 would work for these kinds of applications? It would be best if any rod suggestions were under or near 200. Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 You can use a crankbait rod for jerkbaits which is usually a medium power with moderate action. For walking style baits I would recommend a rod with an extra fast tip. A moderate action rod would make it challenging to walk a bait. I wouldn't recommend having one rod for those 3 purposes. Quote
Attila Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 While I use an XF for my walking style baits, I've heard good things about the Daiwa Tatula Elite Signature Series bass rods. A quick look at the Daiwa webpage shows that they have a MH R crankbait rod designed by Takahiro Omori that has the same action as the topwater/jerkbait rod designed by Randy Howell. The rods retail for $179.99 over at Tackle Warehouse. Cheers. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted June 22, 2017 Super User Posted June 22, 2017 For small/medium topwaters, most jerk baits, and small/medium crank baits I use a 6'6'' medium heavy action rod. You can choose a shorter or longer rod based on your personal preferences. 1 Quote
Hot Rod Johnson Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 The Dobyns Champion Series, DC 734C S/H, Length: 7'3", Price: $259.99, Primary Techniques: Buzzbaits / Horny Toads / Jigs / Senkos / Small Swimbaits / Spinnerbaits.... Secondary Techniques: Chatterbaits / Spooks... By far the most versatile rod Dobyns has..... Quote
gilkeybr Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 For me I would also consider when I'll be using it: From the bank or on a boat? I sometimes get annoyed with smacking my rod-tip on the ground whilst bank fishing if the rod is too long and i'm using a walking bait. On a boat a 7'0" is no problem, but from shore I prefer a little shorter. Currently really digging my 6'10" Lews MH as a do all rod. It does fall more into the budget segment though Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 I think your going to have a hard time finding a rod that throws jerks/topwater and crankbaits well. I think two different (cheaper) rods would make more sense. Quote
FamilyFishinFood Posted June 22, 2017 Author Posted June 22, 2017 Yeah I think that makes sense. I already have a rod that would probably work well for walking bait. I'm guessing mono would be best for jerkbaits and cranks in shallow water? 1 Quote

aprestonSEK Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 Check out the Kistler Crank rip twitch rods. I have the 6'9 MH that is extremely versatile. I throw jerkbaits, cranks, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, chatterbaits, poppers, spooks, and whopper ploppers on mine. I throw 10-12lb mono or fluorocarbon for jerkbaits and cranks. 12-15lb mono for poppers. 18lb fluoro for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. and 30lb braid for spooks and ploppers 1 Quote

Made a mistake when I ordered it thinking it was the BIG TOPWATER Randy Howell……. I’m either gonna try to fish big walking baits with it or sending it back but Diawa rods are hard to find right now. I really wanted the TOPWATER rod but this glass rod they sent me may work ???? Quote
