What is the better rod for throwing 1/2, 5/8 ounce Sammys, Gunfish, etc ? Do you any specific recommendations?

Going to make it a lot harder on you to try to work those walking baits with a slow tip like you'll have on a cranking rod. I prefer something in the 6-7 foot range, M/F or even M/XF.

I assume you both are using Mono for the stretch in working the walking baits and to let the fish get it? What #? ty

Go with the fast or extra fast action rod (whichever power is rated for the weights you plan on throwing), and spool it up with 15-30 pound braid with a short 2 foot section of 15-20 pound mono leader.  The mono leader is just to keep the braid from tangling with the treble hooks.

I found it difficult to walk a bait with a M rod and braid. I know most use mono for topwater.

I use a Powell Max 704 CB with straight 30lb braid.  I have no issues but I also might not use topwater plugs as often as most anglers.

I just got myself a Father's Day gift for topwater, lighter weigthless plastics and some cranks.  Im not a dad, but I got when I got my dad his gift :)   6'10" M/F Duckett Ghost with a Abu Silver Max reel. I put 10# mono on, not sure how that will be or I'd be better off with a heavier test.
