So I know it's just post-spawn (and the season just opened a week ago) here in Vermont but I haven't had the chance to get out yet...how's the fishing? What lure/technique seems to be hot right now?

Seems Vermont needs to step up to the 21st century.   "The season just opened"  really????  It's June and the season just opened?  laughable.  Where do they think they are, the north pole???

Yeah, I know but we usually are trout fishing during that time and wait for the keeper season to open before we switch to bass.

Spawn is still going on Champlain (albeit the tail end).  That's why we have a late season, the ABA out of Plattsburgh on opening day was a bed fishing slaughter.  Hundreds of bedded fish yanked off.

On Champlain aside from spawn/bed baits. the topwater bite has started.  Fish are all over inches to 16'+

Relax, No one ridiculing anyone.  Just find it strange that a lot of states open early or don't have a closed season.  I know the northern section of Vt is very cold, but why should it effect the whole state??  Most bass fisher people practice catch and release, anyway.

Only in certain counties from what I understand though, right?  Fished the St. Lawrence from Waddington/Masena last year and those rules applied, got down to Oswego to fish Ontario and people down that way had no clue there were restrictions on bass fishing further north/east and looked at me like an idiot when I informed them.

Why do we have such a late season?  We spawn later, and when years like this one happen (lake still 59-60 in the Mid-Lake, when is should be near 70) we still have HUGE numbers of spawning fish during this open season.  The Article below is pretty eye opening.

 http://www.outdoorcanada.ca/Fishing-for-nesting-bass

for example:

The FLW/Costa was just there and bedding smallmouth must have made up most of the fish (8 fish per boat per day on average).  195boats x 8=1560 spawners per day were weighed in (their beds are dead).  That doesn't count the fish caught and moved/culled away from their bed, which is at least the same number per day.  So doing that math you are looking at close to 6000 beds that were killed in that tournament (didn't figure in day 3 where it was 10 boats).  The smallies caught during this tournament were the 2nd wave of spawners, so it by no means decimated the population. It is a significant strain on the population recruitment in certain areas.  If we had earlier seasons this sort of impact on reproduction would skyrocket.

I run a bunch of tournaments up here and have no problem with our shortish season.
