Super User NHBull Posted June 19, 2017 Super User Posted June 19, 2017 I'm embarrassed to say that until this year, I have never thrown a popper. I have always had other solutions for top water, but find myself enjoying the popmax and splash it. I am also enjoying the larger jerk. The jersk have been on a MH crankbait rod rated for 1 ounce. The poppers have been on the same and a MH spinning setup. I am looking at getting 2 more rods, both gloomis. Simple question....what is a preferred rod for poppers and jerk baits. Thanks, I realize it can be tiresome with these questions Al Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 19, 2017 Super User Posted June 19, 2017 Were I to use the same rod for poppers and jerkbaits (I don't), it would be a 6'6" Medium Fast. 1 Quote
The Patriot Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I just picked up a 6'10" M/F Duckett Ghost. Poppers are on the list of the lures I'll use on this setup. Quote
Dtrombly Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 A medium/fast casting rod is my choice, 6'6" to 7' long. Spinning rod will also work well I just heavily prefer casting gear Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 19, 2017 Super User Posted June 19, 2017 I use and love the avid 66mf for both with an alphas. I run 14lb xl during the summer for topwaters and 10lb YHB in the spring and winter for jerkbaits. Quote

Sorry, it was a bit miss worded....I am looking for 2 roda and am looking for characteristics for both popper and another for jerks Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 19, 2017 Super User Posted June 19, 2017 Even if i could have a second rod and i have many the avid does a good job for me on both. The large topwater baits over 3/4 i use my avid 66mhf. 1 Quote
mwh33 Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I throw my topwater, excluding frogs, on a Megabass Destroyer Bandersnatch. For my jerkbaits I throw them on a dobyns xp 705cb. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 For jerk baits you work the rod tip from paralell to the water surface and jerk the tip downwards to the water surface. If the rod is too long the tip strikes the water surface even when standing on a bass boats deck. Length of rod for jerk baits can be dependant on your height above the water. I am not vary tall at 5' 7" so my jerk bait rods are 6'6" long. Top water poppers can be fished with the same jerk bait rod, I prefer a 6'10" 3 power fast action rod for poppers and smaller dog walking lures. I don't believe it's very effective to use a spinning outfit for jerk baits do to trying the reel with a erratic rythym and keep the line tight on the spool,so I always used a baitcasting reel. tander Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I am with the 6'6" M/F crowd. I got a Falcon Lowrider that works great for topwater/jerkbait. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 Well...........I didn't see one GLoomis rod suggested. Won't get one from either. My only GLoomis is a flyrod. Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 Loomis has a IMX specific jerk bait rod at 6'9" 812SJBR currently on sale at TW, not familiar with that rod. Tom 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 20, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 20, 2017 I use a 6' 8" M/F, 6' 3" M/MF, and a 6' 10" MH/F for jerks depending on the situation. For poppers I use a 6' 2" M/XF. I can make a popper move better with this rod than any other I've ever used. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 If you are looking G.Loomis then the Jerkbait series is perfect. I retired my 752C jerkbait rod when I started using the Lucky Craft Pointer 100, it could handle them but the 5/8oz weight of the lure made me have to take some care casting as the rod could be overloaded on a back cast. That said, if you are using baits in the 1/4oz to 3/8oz range the 752C or 812C would work great for both, but if you are using baits that are a little heavier the 753C or 813C is a good choice, what I like is the rod has the perfect tip, it is a fast action but the tip is soft but not too soft, you can work a popper or jerkbait pretty hard if you like and no tip recovery like cranking rods have but when you hook up the rod is forgiving in the tip section with good all around backbone. Another option if you like the 6'9" length is the Hammer rod in a MH, it is a mod fast action but it can handle smaller baits as well as something in the 5/8oz range easily and while it is a mod-fast in action it isn't too soft. 1 Quote
