Joshua Beaver Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Howdy folks. Names Josh, I'm 25 and I've been fishing since I was like 3 or 4. It was my grandmother who taught me how to fish, starting with species like bluegills, trout, and catfish. Since then I've went after many different species, my target though is to catch that massive lunker bass who's never been caught. Now granted, that's every bassers dream, but who says we can't all have the same dream? Anyways, I've only just recently been able to put serious cash toward that ambition, most recently having been able to purchase my first baitcasting setup. This setups consisting of a Backbone 6'6" medium-heavy action rod and a Cadillac reel, model I can't really remember right now. And might I say, the backlashes I have dealt with so far have been easy to reverse except for one. Needless to say I had to remove all my line from the reel and start over, WHILE FISHING! But getting the hang of it quite quickly and getting better every cast. Well that's all about me for now as I can tell that I'm rambling now. Looking forward to receiving everyone's input on future posts and giving mine as I continue my journey to catching that prehistoric lunker some day. May your cast be long and your line tight with the days catch. Quote
visagelaid Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 It takes practice. Welcome to the forum! 1 Quote
Joshua Beaver Posted June 19, 2017 Author Posted June 19, 2017 I have always used an open face spinning reel so it took some getting used to but thanks to watching pros and videos on both using baitcasting reels and tips for removing backlash before I bought one, it has made the learning curve a lot less steep and less frustrating. Now if I could just figure out the best lure colors and presentation for the waters I fish, I'll be set. But hence the reason practice and experimentation is key with bass fishing. And than you for the greeting, looking forward to meeting many great folks here and even some fishing buddies. Quote

Jartbek Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Welcome and I understand I just made the switch to bait casting this year have only had a couple bad back lashes but I manage to teach myself to press my thumb on the spool when the lure/bait hits the water. Quote

FreddoB Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Welcome to the club Josh! I'm newer to baitcasting too but you keep at it and you'll get the hang of it. I so enjoy throwing baits with it and ordered my second reel last night. love the addiction. Now go catch that lunker you've dreamed of! Have fun!! Quote
Joshua Beaver Posted June 19, 2017 Author Posted June 19, 2017 @Jartbek and @FreddoB Bait casting so far has been easy to learn as far as actual casting goes. Backlashes are minimal now, usually only when I'm throwing something lighter than the recommended weight, mine being betweend 3/8th and 1oz based on my rod quals. In fact just got back from fishing and all but had about a 2 lber, but the darn suckered got tangledone in the bank weeds (lily pads) and my line snapped. Must have had a weak spot since it is 20 lb braid but hey, we all lose one sometimes. 1 Quote

Ah that's too bad but is "Fishing" and not "catching"! I use 50 lb PowerPro line on my baitcaster and I can straighten hooks that get snagged. But then I've had a fish drag me into a log or something before I knew what hit me and they come off and leave my bait stuck - UGH! I get my share of backlashes too but they're more and more rare like with you. Go find those new fisheries to try! 1 Quote

Yeah I understand that had one get off because of the weedsame trying to pull the bass in I use 15lb Co polymer mainly crankbait and jig with it. Quote
