Initial thoughts on Whopper Plopper 130 and 90

Tried the Whopper Plopper 90 in Bone and 130 in a color I don't know what it was. It is a lake that I fish that isn't known for a great topwater bite. It was about 5pm at night. 

 

The 90 got a bite on the 3rd cast after it had landed and sat for awhile. I set the hook and missed. It seemed to plop and plane fine.  

 

After awhile I switched to the 130 and the first thing I noticed was how heavy it was. It felt like I was throwing a heavy musky lure. 

 

It planed well and cast well but hit the water a lot louder than I wanted it too. I caught almost all of my fish on the stop and go retrieve except one that bit near the boat on a steady retrieve. I also caught a large sunnie when I let it sit after it landed. 

 

All in all I'm really happy with them. Caught 3 fish on them and lost about 4. My first thought was an in-between size would be perfect so the 110 should fit the bill. 

 

 

All pics are 130 size so you can see how large that sunnie is.

I might have an hr on them, and have only caught 1 fish. They have recently become very popular amongst the older guys in our club, takes them  little longer to catch on to new baits lol. But them have been doing very well with them, especially when the shad spawn was going on with the bone color. I know a cpl fish in the 9+ category have been landed. I would change the hooks on it if u haven't already, stay the same sz as I went larger on the front on it didn't run right. Also the guy doing the best with them is using the stop and go retrieve. He didn't say but has been having fish and big fish hit it just sitting on the stop and go retrieve so I'm thinking he has put a feathered treble on the rear and I have done the same lol.

Also, I fished for about 2 hours and used the WP for less than an hour. 

 

 

How do you know what the Hook size is?

 

What did brand and model hook did you change to?

I wouldn't replace the hooks on the 130.  Those things are pretty darn beefy, in my opinion.  The 90 the hooks are fairly light wire, so maybe you could consider changing them, but I would hesitate to add any weight to the 90 and affect how it floats.

 

The 110 really seems to be a perfect middle ground bait.  Lands much more "softly" (subjectively) than the 130, but seems to "plop" more happliy than the 90 which can run a little sub-surface depending on the conditions.  Wish they would have had the 110s available from the start!

A lot of people have had issues with the split rings on the 90s breaking.  I've swapped mine out since breaking one on my first WP with a small 10" fish.

Can't remember what size they were.  I just matched them up with the ones on a bait when I was at Bass Pro.  They were the XPS bass pro brand rings and haven't had another issue since.

It casts a mile so it's great for combing "Large Flats" or "Expanses" and obviously its ability to work at the widest possible range of speeds makes it a great option... Very user friendly to fish for the first time fisherman.. The ability to completely stop the lure really has many advantages...

I don't have much time using mine yet but I have noticed this too.  There is a significant weight difference between these two sizes.  I have heard that the new 110 is a good alternative.  Try throwing the 190 sometime, you really WILL need a muskie setup for that hog

The 130 cast a mile, took mine out for the first time, had a strong wind behind me and wasn't paying attention, I look down at my reel and ALL of my line is gone. Yep, casted a whole spool of braid off my reel. The whopper plopper just sailed off into the sunset

My favorite topwater is my KVD Sexy Dawg, and it casts a mile and doesn't feel nearly as heavy as the Whopper Plopper 130, it feels light, like you could cast it all day and not notice.

I've been using them since they came out, mostly the 90 series loon and munky butt and have had great success with them. I only use braid with these. Using mono or flouro drags the nose of the lure down and will prevent it from making the plopping sound.

Off the top of my head I think they r a sz 6. Just know from experience or u can just match them up w your replacement hook of choice. As I learned from trial and error going up one sz weighs the bait down and it doesn't work correctly. I replaced it w a red round bend on the front of the same sz. I also run a feather treble on the back. Change hooks for my own crazy phycosis lol. I want a high quality sharp hook on all my baits. The front one red as I believe it helps fish key in on the front hook, rear feather for more attraction especially when it's sitting still. I use braid to a one foot mono 13lb leader. Any of the top brand hooks r fine, gammy, Mustad or owner.

I've fished them (90 size)  on mono and straight braid with similar results. I don't know exactly why but this lure more than any other the back treble always seemed to catch fish in the gills, side, etc., and the front treble was firmly in the mouth. I removed the rear treble and upsized the front to a #2. Probably exaggerates the dynamics that cause the "issues" some have but I hold my rod up a bit on the retrieve and it does its thing. Don't feel that the hook adjustment has done anything to hurt the hookup ratio, yet at least.
