I don't have any experience working with reels, but would like to learn to take care of my own. I've looked on youtube and on the forum for videos, but can't find one on how to change the gears. If not, I think professional might not be a bad idea. this video shown not daiwa but at least you know what to expect. Daiwa you have to remove brake dial with coin or your finger nail do not use flat head screw driver. Another video I just found, don't know what he said but the one he point finger is main gear, make sure every drag washer back to the gear in order. Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 It's super easy and you have to learn at some point so why not now. Set your parts out in the order you remove them. Take pics if you need to. Here we go... Remove palm side plate and spool. Use a small flat to push in the nut cover tabs on the back of the handle. Use a 10mm turned to the right to loosen the handle nut. Remove the cast cap and pinion shaft. Remove the drag star by spinning it to the right. Under it will be 2 drag washers,a small washer,and a bearing. Your drag washers are curved and should be reinstalled opposite of each other. Like this () -- take the frame screws out and remember where the go. Pull your sideplate up and off the crankshaft. Remove the anti reverse bearing sleeve and note how it comes off. It can be installed upside down. Pull up on your pinion gear and it should come out easily. There will be 2 yoke springs,a yoke, and the pinion gear. Now pull up on your main gear. Set the drag stack aside in the order it comes out of the main gear. There's a plastic washer under the main gear and it'll probably stick to the bottom of it. Make sure you put the washer on before the main gear. It's used for proper spacing of the gears. Reinstall everything in the reverse order. Just remember not to overgrease the new gears. A dab on the yoke and and springs. Grease the new main gear about 1/2 way around and then rotate it to work the grease the whole way around. I sent you a pm with a useful link. @DaveT63 2 Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 I recently did a full detail strip of one of my reels and had a lot of difficulty getting it back together. Fortunately the Internet is full of people who know what they're doing and are nice enough to help walked me through getting it back together. At least for the reel I was working on, a Zillon SV, the exploded diagram has some ambiguity in terms of the exact orientation at some parts, so taking pictures would've been tremendously helpful for me. But now that I've done it once I'm far more confident about taking them apart and will not make any of my more idiotic mistakes the second time. Quote

The internet is a tremendous resource but keep in mind it is not edited or filtered. Use common sense and your own judgement and logic to apply suggestions from the web. Don't expect to do this job in 20 minutes as a rookie. Be prepared to troubleshoot if all doesn't go according to plan. 1 Quote

Dave i had to send a reel to mike that i had all humpty dumpty and couldn't put back together again!! i sent mike a reel that was like 75% assembled and a bag of parts and he returns a fully functioning reel! 1 Quote

I wish I knew this site years ago. I opened up my Abu spinning reel for the first time to clean end up lost one of the small spring, now that reel can back spin freely without lock. Quote
