Caught this little beast last night. I packed light and wasn't expecting to get any big ones and didn't bring my scale. But I hooked this sucker on my 2nd cast into a small pond. It's easily the biggest bass I've ever caught. Judging by my photo next to my arm he's about 16-17" long. The lure is a 2.5" pompadour jr. Im thinking he could be 5lbs.

Definitely bigger than 2 1/2! This thing has a deep bulky body.

The average weight of a 16.5" largemouth bass is 2lb 8oz

the camera usually adds weight. I would say 2 1/2 give or take 1/2 lb.

2.5-3 pounds, not trying to rain on your part but that definitely doesn't weigh 5 pounds.

I would say it's a good 2.5 to 2.75 lbs which is a nice bass.  I suppose it could almost be 3 lbs but that would have to be pretty fat at 17".

It's most definitely not even close to 5 lbs at that length.  I caught a 19" this year that was fat and it was 4lbs-14oz.  A couple weeks later I caught a 18" that weighed 3lbs-12oz.  This is why I don't see how it's possible it could weigh close to 5lbs but it's still a great catch.

Weighing fish on scales tends to cause them to lose weight.

So do cameras....I don't recall ever having a fish that didn't lose a pound or two once it was 'caught on film' ...or phone...they always get smaller

Darn it, I wish that held true when I step on a scale   :D

It does have big "shoulders" ... You should carry a soft tape ruler if you don't want to use a scale . A measure of length and girth at it's roundest area will give you the closest estimation of the weight.

Other than a scale or exact measurements... It's all here say !

Im guessing around 3 pounds. Bass get much larger than 16-17". My PB length was 24"...

I believe most of the "world class" largemouth are in the 28- 32" range...

That being said you did catch a nice healthy adult largemouth. And that's always the goal for me.

Nice job.

i was going to say just over 2#

ive caught a "3.5s" that weigh 2.38 to many times.

The other comment i have, not to be the buzzkill. If your not going to eat that fish, try to avoid laying it in the dirt.It needs it's slime coat.

Going to agree with those saying in the 3ish range. It's difficult to say based on the pictures provided. Regardless, it's still a nice healthy looking LMB.

For reference this is a 4lb 9oz smallie, around my neck of the woods, smallmouth seem to be a little more dense than the LMB. So a smallie of similar length and girth of a largemouth tends to be a bit heavier. You caught a nice fish there, but I'm thinking you're lingering in that 3lb area. Good catch man! I'll take those all day!!

2.8 lbs.  Is my guess. IMO smallmouth are even tougher to estimate. I've had "huge" smallmouth ring in around 3.3 to 3.6. Don't get me wrong, that's a nice fish, but they never seem to weigh what we think. A 17" 5lber would have one he'll of a head and gut on it. Which the op's fish does not.

Definitely not 5 lbs, it's a healthy fish for its size, but I'd be guessing right around 2.5.

Why is it the people who come on asking how much their fish weighs are always the first to tell everyone that they're wrong? haha
