When you get a bite just let the fish shake off, and have him cast to it. That way neither of you catch fish . Problem solved. Quote

onetime Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I will usually LOL, cover my mouth and start pointing at him. Or will slap him in the face with the bass I'm catching. When I take someone that is not an avid fisherman/woman, I will do my best to put them on fish, and educate them on why we are doing certain things. It's usually the former though 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted June 14, 2017 Super User Posted June 14, 2017 If you're serious about helping them, trade rods with them. Then coach them as to what you were doing with it. Quote

And two , are you catching dinks ? Or are you mishandling nice fish ? Maybe you were just joking.. it just rubbed me the wrong way.. like when I see someone mistreat their kids... My blood boils cuz I couldn't imagine someone treating my kid that way. I understand the comparison is not the same... But it makes my blood boil the same way when I see people acting stupid with fish. Some people love , respect , admire and cherish those fish... And others take them for granted. 3 Quote

While we are fishing though I always try to help the other guy out because In the Heat of the Moment even good friends can get really frustrated with each other. My favorite was after I had a tough day and my buddy had a pretty good one, in the car ride home he looked over at me and just said, "well, at least you figured out what the pattern wasn't." ? 2 Quote

Yeah, one good stab is usually in order. Recently I was fishing with a friend and I wash crushing them and he was getting skunked. We were both using frogs and after catching a fish a looked at my frog and said "d**n, they are destroying my frog. The paint is peeling off!" He just looked at me and said, "Yeah, I don't have that problem." If roles were reversed I'd expect a jab or two coming my way. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 And because fishing is supposed to be "fun" the ribbing between friends should be expected and taken as humor. Now if it's mean spirited then we have a problem. 1 Quote

shimmy Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 We always have a good system. When 2-4 in a boat, the person getting the first cast has a better chance of catching a big fish or more fish. Obviously, big fish are caught from the back of the boat, but this seems to hold true in general. Don't believe it, watch some FLW tournaments with the guy in the back getting destroyed in nearly every boat. What we do is every 4 pounder that is caught puts you in the back of the boat and everyone just moves up a spot. This has worked real well for us. When the bite is offshore and someone is not getting bites, give them some of the stuff you are using or if it is a presentation thing, fill them in! Very simple formula. The boat rotation is fun and has worked perfectly for us. 3 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 I tell them what I think I'm doing well. They can either do it or go another direction. Some won't do what you suggest. I know I've not taken someone's advice before. If you're keeping fish, split the take with them anyway. At least they can enjoy some fruits of the good fortune. Someone on this thread is lacking a sense of humor. Quote
onetime Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Do any of you guys fish two up front? Whenever I'm in my boat and have a buddy along, I always want them up front with me(makes the bass face slap easier ) because it seems to work out better. Same if I'm in someone else's boat I'll hop my azz up front with them, works out great. Fishing from the back of the boat sucks! Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 If you're experiencing a great fishing day while your boat-mate is struggling, reach into your tackle box and give him/her the same lure that you're using. That doesn't always solve the problem, but will always serve as a learning experience. Roger Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted June 15, 2017 Super User Posted June 15, 2017 I will stop fishing and teach my friend what to do in order for him to start catching fish. Quote
RPreeb Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I remember days when we were kids, 4 of us fishing for crappies with minnows, just hook and sinker straight off the side of the boat. No 2 lines were more than 8 feet apart, yet it always seemed like at least one of us couldn't get bit no matter what. Seems to be a "Law of Fishing" that no matter how good they are biting, there is always someone who gets skunked. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted June 16, 2017 Super User Posted June 16, 2017 I've been on both sides of this and if I'm catching them and my pal ain't I'll go as far as to give them the same kind of bait I'm using. However, when my buddy just won't slow down the retrieve or even use what I'm catching them on, ain't nothing I can do. If I'm not catching fish and my friend is, I adjust. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. Basically, if I'm on the losing end of this I take responsibility. I don't expect the other guy in the boat to help me catch fish. Quote
CroakHunter Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Had a day like this 3 years ago. Two of us in the from bass fishing 2 in the back crappie fishing. The crappie fishermen were killing it and I had about a 20lb bag. My friend caught 1 fish all day and it was about an 8 inch bass. I gave him exactly what I was throwing and told him how I was working it, he tried but failed. A little ribbing at the end of the day and all was good. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted June 16, 2017 Super User Posted June 16, 2017 The reality is it happens. Fishing shallow target based lakes makes it even worse. I try to share the front as best I can but it is what it is. A-Jay is right, I try to make it fun. On deeper clear water things get a little more even, especially when drop shotting. There will be days when the wind is bad and trying to control the boat is a bear and the guy in the back will be focused and back end me. It's fair. What's even worse is when you're by yourself and you aren't catching them. Then you have to accept you front ended yourself. I guess if I hook a good one I can always hand my rod to myself so I can play it to the boat. Then I can scream at myself to get the net. Being that my hearing is bad....I wouldn't hear myself anyway. I think it's time to go to bed. Quote

BaitMonkey1984 Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 So I have been on the losing end of this when trolling sewn on smelt for landlocked salmon in Maine a lot of times. For Bass Fishing I usually rig up whoever is going in my boat with what I am using, and what has been working so this very rarely occurs. This year though, we had the best jerk bait bite on my home lake for 2 weeks pre spawn. They were killing a deep rapala shadow rap and a live target jerk bait. I had been out during the week and located a transition area and hammered them on these two baits. I took my Dad out that weekend, had the exact same lure tied on for him. I caught 11 and he caught 0. And the area was so large that it wasn't like I was back boating him. Same line, cadence etc. I laughed for the first 6 fish then tried to get him one. I set him up with a good approach etc and even stopped casting to good looking targets. My takeaway was that the difference was due to casting abilities. I use casting gear and am able to make longer and more accurate casts. I am going to work on becoming more accurate because I have seen the difference a good cast can make. Quote
