Tweek1106 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I'm actually relatively new to the bass fishing scene. Only about 3 1/2 years and counting. Due to that, YouTube, and the limited fishing season in Western Pennsylvania my experience doesn't match my knowledge (example: I can tell you how to rig and fish a punch setup for heavy vegetation but have never actually done it). So I actually regularly experience fishing "firsts" that wouldn'tbe noteworthy to many others. Some firsts this year are.......first time keeping track of how many bass I caught this year (140 and counting) 1st bass on a lipless crankbait, first bass on a chatterbait, first bass on a swim jig (now my favorite type of lure), and this past week my first bass ever on a top water frog. Just wanted to thank you guys (or yinz, if you're from Pittsburgh as well) and BassResource.com for helping me learn the art and get more enjoyment from what has quickly become my passion and see if any of you are still experiencing "firsts" in bass fishing? 9 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted June 12, 2017 Super User Posted June 12, 2017 This is a great site. It is site is full of class act dudes on here that are willing to share their knowledge. There are site that don't operate like that. I've been doing this a long time and I'm always picking up things .I'm eastern PA and one of these times I'm going to come out and fish the three river area. I'm a bit of a river rat and that's a bucket list item I want to do. Good luck and have fun. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 13, 2017 Great to hear the site is helping in your journey! Never stop learning, that's one of the biggest keys in getting better at this sport. I've been doing it 30 years and still experience firsts and strive to learn something new all the time. I caught my first bass on an underspin this year and it has quickly become a rig I reach for quite often now that I understand it. It's a great feeling when the light bulb comes on. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted June 13, 2017 Super User Posted June 13, 2017 The quality of the members here is much better than a lot of other sites I am on. No senceless bickering, not over moderated and a lot of information. Oh yeah, I had a first this year as well.......my first double digit Northern Snakehead. 8 Quote
BCline Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 I have only been bass fishing for 4 years and also am still experiencing many firsts. Like you 2017 is the first year I have kept a fishing log to record weather conditions (temperature, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure and moon phase) and the number a size of the bass caught (194 to date). This year saw my first 7+ pound bass (the one in my profile picture), first bass on a weightless Senko and the first bass not hooked in the mouth (I managed to get a hook in the top of his head). Other firsts I hope to see this year are my first double digit bass and catching a fish out of my first bass boat. I have been given a 1984 Bayliner Trophy 1710 which needs a lot of restoration before it will ready for the water. 1 Quote

Dtrombly Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 First time I've set the hook on what I thought was a big smallmouth, ended up being a dink and he went flying past my head and landed a few feet behind me. Lol. He was ok though! 3 Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 I caught my first spinnerbait bass this year. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 13, 2017 Super User Posted June 13, 2017 For me, this year, a "first" was the Ned Rig. And it has not let me down ONCE, saved me from certain skunk days. 2 Quote

I know how rig and fish pretty much every lure but have probably actually fished only half of them. I also caught my first topwater fish on the 2nd cast this year 1 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Saw a bird go head first from about 30 feet up into the river and come up with a fish. Caught a 6lb channel cat on a wacky rig shim e stick. 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted June 13, 2017 Super User Posted June 13, 2017 I think I posted in a previous thread earlier this year that I would like to catch some smallmouth on a jerk bait because I had bought some on sale 2 years ago and couldn't catch a single fish on them all of last season (not even a slimy pike that often bite anything). Well I stuck with it and yesterday I caught 3 of them on one! They were all nice smallies too, 17+ inches long. I was noticing a lot of fish on the sonar suspended in 12 feet of water about halfway down so I picked a jerk bait and fished it at that range and literally within 3 casts a fish hit it. 1 Quote
XpressJeff Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Go ahead and laugh as I'm sure some will find this very humorous, I caught my first fish on a Senko! I have learned a whole lot, laughed a lot, and have explored MANY facets of Bass fishing since I became a member of this forum and I thank you all! 2 Quote

A three inch hair jig fished float n' fly style under a bobber is a bass slayer at one of the ponds I fish regularly. I've had many 20+ fish days with that rig while others fishing around me struggled to get a fish or two. 1 Quote
