Super User ww2farmer Posted January 26, 2007 Super User Posted January 26, 2007 Went out to Bass Pro Shops in Auburn NY today and bought the boat I talked about in another thread. Brand new ProTeam 170, it's a 16' mod-v, aluminum bass boat. 25HP 4 stroke Merc., not a speed demon, they claim it will do 25MPH, so I figure it will push 20mph lol, but I rarely if ever fish lakes bigger than 1000 acres, and I don't do tournaments, and the extra weight of a bigger motor IS a factor for towing. Only option I got was the electric tilt/trim, comes with just about every thing else (trailer, TM, fish finder, etc...), I 'll probably buy an onboard charger and cover. It will be a big step up from what I am used to and have now, an 8' molded plastic bass boat, powerd by a 30lb thrust TM. I will keep the small one for ponds and such. They tell me it should be in by April at the latest, just in time!! Best thing about it....it's mine.......no payments, and it's new, no worrys about what the other guy did or didn't do to it. Quote

For a first time boater, I didn't want to plunk down 10's of thousands of dollars on glass boat, or get any headaches with a used boat. I can see myself fishing this boat for a while, then trading up. I dunno though, in 10 years if I wanted to trade it on a Ranger like your's Redline Robert, I might have to pay them to take it.... ;D. BTW Robert that is one fantastic looking boat, congrats on your purchase as well. Quote

My father in-law has the 175 with a 25hp 2 stroke and it run mid 20's with 2 bigger guys in it, so yours should run good. Good choice in getting the power trim, it make life so much easier. Also will give you some more speed, since you can play with it and trim the boat for whatever load you have in it. The power trim alone give my father in-laws boat about 2-3 mph better than the same boat without it. One thing, those lake that felt "big" will seem "Not that big" anymore Yes, get the cover and charger when you can. One thing on the cover. Buy a good cover, one of those el-cheepos will not do anything for you. Go to a custom boat cover shop and have them build you a good water-proof/travel cover. It will cost a little more (a few hundered bucks), but will last a long time and keep your new inverstment looking good for a long time. have fun, fish alot 8-) 8-) 8-) Quote

The little plastic bass boat I have actually handled fine out on the lake's.........but the lack of storage, and the extreamly LOOOOOONG time it took to get anywhere with only a TM made my mind up for me more than anything else. Plus my wife likes to fish and 2 people with any kind of gear is just a joke in that little thing. I still don't think I can beat the little boat for getting up into all the creeks/canals and ponds I like to fish. The Tracker will be my boat for the GIANT 800 acre lakes I fish ;D. Quote

Once the new wears off and you have a few good scratches on the hull, it will be surprising what you can get into. I have a 16' aluminum hull and I go almost anywhere I want. Some guys I fish with get nervous because I never use the anchor, I just get it stuck in the timber, fish the area real well and break it loose to find another spot. HeHe Have Fun! Ronnie Quote

May I recommend that you put anchor in your boat with 100' of line? I run into all kinds of people that don't keep an anchor in the boat. Their logic is I have a motor and I have a trolling motor, why do I need an anchor? An anchor might save your bacon on a windy day if you have an engine problem. It might keep you out where you can flag down help instead of up against the shore getting the crap beat out of your boat. (Yes, this happpened to me a very long time ago) An anchor will also help you sit still in current. Take care and have fun. Tom Quote
