This video was extremely helpful. Went out tonight and added a co-polymor leader and loop knot. Had the perfect cadence down and not one tangle! No blowups but at least these responses helped me eliminate the issues. I'll use a snap next time too.

Walking is easier if you maintain a timed rhythm, but you'll get more blow-ups if you change cadence or stop it occasionally during the retrieve, at least until you determine what's working best.  Changing the rhythm is a little more difficult to master for beginners, but it's the best way to determine how the fish want it.

I'll often revert back to doing just that when the bite dies off only to discover they wanted it with a wide slow cadence, or a quick start up after a pause when I'd been catching them with a steady quick walk earlier.

I agree. A steady walk produces fewer fish and smaller fish and more misses for me. Mixing in lots of pauses in my retrieve has produced more fish and better sized fish.

I use braid and a snap and never have any problems. Those smaller baits are going to be harder to walk as well. Try gentler jerks of the rod. Smaller baits need smaller input to walk or they just drag forward and run over their own line.

That's awesome!  Glad I can help!
