freelancer27 Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Hi all,I bought a Daiwa Steez A TW Casting Reel 1016SHL on the 10th of May 2017 from Tackle Warehouse. After my 2nd outing with the reel two issues occurred with the reel. 1st: The pin that is adding to the stability of the reel got loose and eventually fell out. 2nd: The reel started making weird noises on retrieve.I have to say that I am a bit disappointed that this happens on a 450 USD reel within the first 4 weeks, which is supposed to be a flagship reel of Daiwa. I have not experienced this with my high end reels from Shimano. It seems like this is a lemon... I sent the daiwa guys videos of the two issues and eventually called them to follow up. They told me I have to send the reel in and expect a turn around time of 3-4 weeks. This is kind of unacceptable to me, given the time that I have used the reel and the price class that the reel is in. What would you do? Thanks! Quote

d-camarena Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Get it replaced or fixed. Then Sell for a high price to the diawa fanboys on the flea market. Next buy a shimano. Done 1 Quote
evilcatfish Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 Call TW and let them know you are returning it. Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 I hope to be in that tax bracket one day. Must be nice! 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Return it to Daiwa and get a new one. Then sell it to me for real cheap and buy a Shimano. That or wait out the 3-4 weeks (couldn't be a worse time of year either) and then enjoy your new reel, I'm sure the replacement will be fine. Quote
freelancer27 Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 I contacted TW and they told me that I should send it to them and they will exchange it. Great service! One of the reasons that I stick with them, even if I have to pay sales tax as a Cali boy! 2 Quote
freelancer27 Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 I am hearing about more and more issues with the new Steez A. I am wondering if I should exchange it to something else: * Daiwa Zillion HD Casting Reels * Shimano Metanium MGL Casting Reel * Abu Garcia REVO MGX Casting Reel I liked the reel from a performance, look and feel. But I am worried that I will have another issue with it down the road... Quote
freelancer27 Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 Oh well. I am just giving it another try, what can go wrong... Quote
cadman Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 It seems that every now and again, someone will have a problem with a name brand. Several years ago I bought (3) Revo Premier Gen 1 reels. I love those reels, still have them to this day. Last year I bought (4) Daiwa Tatulas Type R reels. I've used 1 of the 4 and it wasn't what I thought was a great reel. In February I bought (3) Revo MGX reels at half off from BPS. I have been using them regularly and I love my MGX reels. I have heard so much negative talk about the MGX reels and how cheap they feel, however I do not have any complaints about them. They are very lightweight and are very easy to cast. All in all every manufacturer will at some point have a problem with their reels even their flagship reels. So, If it were me, and you love the reel get it fixed or replaced and use it. If you still don't like it go on to a different brand. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 That reel won't work right if you run low on caviar or Grey Poupon® What is the pin that stabilizes the reel? I want one! 2 Quote

I have some interest in the regular Steez TW and would assume these issues would carry over. Quote
Super User MickD Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Make sure the screw is tight on this one. If it loosens, tighten it. Use Loctite. Quote

You'll be happy with a Shimano in your hands. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 I know a bunch of people with the non A version of the new Steez and they have all said it's one of the best reels they have ever used. Some of these people being very diehard Shimano fans too. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 I'm intrigued to know what the stabilizing pin is more usually known as. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 If you have problems get a sv103 and be done with it. Quote
freelancer27 Posted June 7, 2017 Author Posted June 7, 2017 Ok, my model is not deliverable until August 30th. I do not want to wait that long for the replacement. So, I am considering other reels. On the the list are: * Daiwa Steez SV TWS Casting Reels 7.1:1 * Metanium MGL 8.5:1 * Abu Garcia REVO MGXTREME2 8.0:1 I would like to use the reel for: Topwater, Spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits (lure weights: 1/4 - 1.5 oz) It is important to me that the reel is: Sturdy, has a good line capacity (at least 100yards of 14# mono) and is light (below 7oz) What would you choose? Are there other options out there? Thanks! Quote
Tim Kelly Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 Personally I wouldn't want a reel faster than around 7:1 for those apps. I'd get a Tatula SV in 6.3 or 7.3 and use it until the Steez is repaired, then see how you feel about the whole situation. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted June 7, 2017 Super User Posted June 7, 2017 Your first call should have been to me,I would have taken it off your hands. And by "stabalizing pin" I can only assume you mean one of the frame screws. If a frame screw is loose you will have noise while reeling as the gears are not tight in place. Simply tightening the screws should fix any issues. Only other "pin" I can think of is the line guide rail which cannot come out unless you take slide plate off and c clips. Quote
