pondbassin101 Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I've noticed that there's been ALOT more boating accidents/ fishing accidents this year. If it's not a boating accident then it's someone injured while fishing and more http://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1778635-3-injured-1-dead-in-norman-boat-wreck http://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1773778-two-anglers-killed-in-boat-collision http://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1774118-two-fishermen-dead-in-pickwick-dam-accident http://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1772548-bass-boat-accident-at-costa-flw-series http://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1754491-two-dead-one-missing-in-ice-fishing-accidenthttp://www.***/outdoors/***/story/1782820-gas-pumped-into-wrong-place-boat-explodes these are just a few Quote

Super User J Francho Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Just more sensationalist click bait. I haven't seen any evidence that the accident rate has gone up. 3 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Only thing going up is people getting the reports out, before they were all local news now they get shared out until they are national. 3 Quote

Well I guess that makes sense, coverage matters. 3 hours ago, Choporoz said: A lot more than what? Links aren't working for me A lot more than last year, I saw way less reports. Quote

I agreee, a life jacket takes literally 30 seconds to put on and saves lives. People just don't realize that until it's too late 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Out of curiosity, I googled the last item from OP....the only 'accident' happened when someone allowed Mr. Martin to actually own a boat....sorry, but I'm still laughing: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/state/north-carolina/article154205254.html "A boat exploded at a dock on the North Carolina coast, injuring three, after the boaters accidentally pumped 28 gallons of gasoline into a fishing rod holder instead of the fuel tank. The three people hospitalized are the boat's owner, David Martin Jr., 40, of Charlotte; passenger Jonathan Bickett, 35, of Charlotte; and Kendrick Schwarz, 24, of Brunswick County..." For some reason, I can't find the part where it says "authorities suspect alcohol was a factor"....sorry...I can't stop laughing 7 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Quote As battery cables were being disconnected in an effort to prevent a spark, a spark occurred anyway, igniting the fuel. Ugh...take the negative off first!!!!!!! 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 um....you're talking about three rocket surgeons that just pumped gas into a rod holder....don't suggest the battery cable order as if it's something they should have known...lol 2 Quote
Super User Further North Posted June 7, 2017 Super User Posted June 7, 2017 Good article to show your kids...this stuff isn't obvious to a lot of people. Quote

Like come on, who pumps gas into a rod locker. Alcohol was probably a major factor here 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 7, 2017 Super User Posted June 7, 2017 I think they pumped the gas into something like this, not a rod locker: https://www.amazon.com/Perko-1205DP0CHR-Angled-Flush-Holder/dp/B0000AY5BS Quote

I'm a strong swimmer but I wouldn't think of being out there without a PFD. I tell my kids, repeatedly, wearing a PFD is like putting on your seatbelt. Quote

I see it on local waters ALL the time. People just getting in to the sport, or even long-timers that adhere to the "you only need a life preserver IN your boat" rule thus don't wear one. You'll even see it in pictures posted here on the forums! I have twice forgotten my PFD and twice have called home to have my wife or one of my sons bring it to me (was after I had unloaded and realized my error). Life is too precious to worry about being "cool" (dual meaning), or "uncomfortable" wearing a PFD. My boys are not allowed to go out in kayaks, canoes, w/o wearing one. 2 Quote

There are probably a countless amount of incidents/accidents that would have ended differently had people worn PDFs. They just don't see beyond the "cool" factor. If a boating accident happens and you're injured, it doesn't matter how strong of a swimmer you are, without a PFD you probably will drown. Even a capsized canoe can go south. 2 Quote
