This has been a type of bait/technique that has completely befuddled me. Makes sense in my head, but could never put it to any use on the water. That all changed at a tournament at Table Rock in March this year. @gardnerjigman mopped the floor with me the first day from the back of the boat with an underspin and 3.8 Keitech Fat. The light came on and since then I've caught tons of fish on them. They're so expensive though, decided to start making my own instead of buying them. This was my first attempt. Found out the smaller wire keeper fits the mold without any modification at all.

I use a modified ultra minnow mold to make underspins. I find the holder on that head works well so I don't need to add the wire keeper. I wasn't doing well with these at first but I since found that in my waters they tend to shine when the water dips down below 60 degrees and a slow retrieve with the blade ticking the bottom occasionally has been the best way to get bites. I also like using a ball bearing swivel rather than a crane or roller swivel, it lets me reel the bait at slow speeds and still keep the blade spinning, you might want to look into that.

I'm trying the bait keeper mainly because I'm fishing Keitechs on them primarily. Those things are so soft I'm seeing if I can get another fish or two out of them. I wanted to go with the BB swivels, but Barlow's didn't have any in stock except for the really expensive ones, so I opted to try the crane swivels this time around. I was catching quite a few with water temps in the mid 70's last Thursday. Still have a lot to learn about fishing them, but they're a great fish catcher now that I understand them a little better. A few variables to deal with in an effort to get exactly what I want I still, but that's part of what is so nice about making your own stuff, fine tuning to get the exact tool you need.

I started fishing those as well this year to see what all the fuss was about. I am a die hard jig guy and I fish a mix of jigs 90% of the time. Well my wife and I  were out in the beginning of April, and the water was below 55 to 58 degrees. We were both fishing jigs and I was not doing well on my jig, so I tied the only underspin I had in the boat on my wife's rod. A couple casts later she started picking up fish. I thought wow that was interesting , I would have never thought that this would work. She got 3 fish that day the biggest being 2 lbs, but I was really surprised. We've been out several times since and have not gotten any on the underspin, but I will keep trying to see if this is something that has potential. I fish mine with a Berkley Havoc.

Give this presentation a try:

Cast and let the lure fall to the bottom on slack line. Keeping your rod steady at about 10:00,

reel quickly, five turns, then let it fall on slack line. DO NOT pump the rod. Reeling allows the

blade to lift the lure with minimum forward motion.

A couple of years ago I had my best day ever on a BassResource RoadTrip at Pickwick. I fish

the Sworming Hornet/ Lake Fork Tackle Live Magic Shad.

I have been thinking of buying that herring head underspin jig mold by Do-It molds but I have not pulled the trigger on it yet. Good looking mold.

I know nothing of underspins, one of the mold options the offer for it seems pretty heavy. What weight do you guys normally fish on those?

I mainly fish the 3/8 and 1/2 ounce sizes but the 1/4 is good for shallow water or for running along docks or fish holding high in the water column.

I have been fishing, 3/8 mainly and if it gets really windy, I go to 1/2 oz. to keep the bait lower in the water column.

What am I missing in the cost of making an underspin?  Most smaller tackle manufacturers price an underspin and a jig about the same and from some admittedly fast searching, it seems like a skirt and weedguard costs more than a swivel and a blade.  Also I feel like building a jig would take a bit more time as well.  Am I crazy?

I fish a ton of 3.8 FI's on swimbait hooks and just started using them on swimjigs this spring.  I want to give underspins a go but some weird sense of cheapness has kept me from buying any.

If they use a premium ball bearing swivel a lot of the cost comes from those. Quality nickel blades and hooks are pricey too. A jig is just a weedguard that is pretty inexpensive, and a jig hook that isn't terribly expensive.

I'll echo Bluebasser86, a high quality ball bearing swivel is expensive. A high quality swivel like a Worth or Sampo along with a high end finished blade alone can actually cost more than a finished jig.

Yes. Yes they are. However IMHO they are COMPLETELY worth it.
