Jartbek Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Been thinking about buying bassmaster magazines. With how many fishing articles their is on the Internet, is it worth to buy the magazines? Quote
Hot Rod Johnson Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I subscribe to the BassMasters Magazine and the B.A.S.S. TIMES... There is some over lap on the articles, both tend to relate to tournament fishing in different locations... I see that you are located in Central Illinois, what areas do you need and want fishing information from..? Try both for one year and decide if they are of any benefit to you... You will learn something that will aid you in your fishing venture... 1 Quote

38 Super Fan Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I let my subscription to Bassmaster run out a couple months ago, and I haven't missed it too much. Quote

The size structure of the bass population in Newton Lake declined last year. The percentage of bass greater than 18" fell by just over 60%, and comprised only 7% of the total population. At the same time the catch per effort skyrocketed to an incredible 251 bass per hour! This lake continues to support a very good bass population, however, the fishery appears to be on the verge of change. The amount of hot water discharged into the lake has declined significantly, and this has resulted in a reduced growing season. In short, it is transitioning from a cooling lake to an ambient lake. In the near term, recruitment continues to be good and, with body condition and growth rates above average, the fishery should remain stable for the near future. For 2017, Newton Lake should still provide excellent angling opportunities. Anglers can expect to catch large numbers of fish from 15” – 20” in length ranging from 2 – 6 pounds. The majority of bass exceeding the 18” minimum will weigh between 3.5 – 7 pounds. Site Regulation: 3 fish daily limit; 18" minimum length limit. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 5, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 5, 2017 You can read most of the magazine on their website. I get it for some reason, haven't paid for it for a few years now. Very rarely do I ever crack the pages. Quote
Attila Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Maybe I'm a bit of an old fashioned guy at 43, but I like flipping through fishing magazines for the informative articles and some of the great quality photography that's found within them. We spend so much time in front of screens (even when we're fishing!) that sometimes it's nice to get back to basics which for me includes magazines. 15 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted June 5, 2017 Super User Posted June 5, 2017 When I was starting out I read Bassmaster cover to cover . I credit it , In-Fisherman and Fishing Facts as my number 1 bass fishing teachers . The guys I fished with were bank beaters and didnt know what a pattern was . BassMaster and the others taught me too pattern fish and find bass off-shore . 3 Quote
oakeybassin Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I subscribed after being given some "archive" issues from my uncle. He has been a loyal subscriber for years and has a special library of all of his issues, meticulously organized by year and issue number. I love flipping through the pages. I can honestly say I have learned a lot by reading through and then rereading a second and third time. I have been a subscriber ever since. I like that I can flip through the pages when I go camping with no internet to hop on the forums. If I have a question about a technique or tip for the next day I have it on paper right with me. 2 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted June 5, 2017 Super User Posted June 5, 2017 With online articles, youtube and chat forums most fishing information is available more conveniently, at no charge and more eco-friendly. I no longer subscribe to any printed fishing media. In another generation online will be the only information resource and we'll be in a world of hurt when cyber-terrorists interrupt/shut down all of our servers!!! oe 1 Quote

I agree with above...except the 43 part I don't follow professional tournament fishing, but I admit that I enjoy reading about it, and the personalities in the magazine. I can't say that I really learn much of anything that can't be learned from this site, but rereading, reinforcing the ideas and hearing them in different ways is always good. But, honestly, I get more than enough value in my subscription from two things: DOTL and the blue bags. The bags are the perfect size for my primary kayak hatch. And Day on the Lake is easily my favorite part of the magazine...learning how a pro attacks a new lake is informative....and admittedly, when a pro gets absolutely humbled by a new lake, I'm always a little heartened. 1 Quote

WTnPuddleJumper Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I think a lot of the b.a.s.s. articles promote lure/tackle sales. We are fortunate down here to have the Mid South Hunting and Fishing news. It gives us a monthly fishing report of most of the major lakes/rivers in TN, ARK, MS. They feature different lakes each edition and is always informative and caters to the weekend sportsman. They post all of the bass clubs schedules and results and even post pics of the winners for free. I believe Bill Dance owns the publication. Quote

tander Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 I have been getting it for a bunch of years. Their is some overlap articles but I think it is still worth the money. Besides, I don't mind giving to an organization that has put bass fishing where it is today. 1 Quote

You shouldn't be using too many GB unless you're streaming videos and music. Anything you stream or download will use your GB, but roaming on this site all month will hardly even use a fraction of a GB. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 6, 2017 Super User Posted June 6, 2017 Been a charter life member since '68 the magazine and BASS Times are interesting reading, very dated articles outside of the tournament coverage that is their life blood. The day on the lake series articles are usually good and informative. The online articles are free. Western bass online articles are excellent and free. Tom Quote
