Chughes37 Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 Can a hollow body frog be thrown on the same rod as a soft plastic horny toad? The places I fish (both on boat and on banks) have light to moderate cover. I was going to get a 7' H/F rod. I'll be pairing it up with a 7.3:1 reel. I haven't messed with braided line too much but I was thinking 50 lbs braid and not so sure about the leader. I would guess 18-20 lbs flurocarbon. Thoughts?? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 4, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 4, 2017 I fish mine on the same gear, although I rarely use toads (the soft plastic style frogs). Your combo will work fine, but skip the leader, there's no need for it and it will hamper the action of your bait. 3 Quote

OnthePotomac Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 And 50lb Sufix 832 braid works fine for me. 1 Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 I'd go straight braid. No FC leader. If you decide to go with a leader, go mono because Fluorocarbon sinks and you are throwing topwater lures and baits. You'll get better action out of the lure with straight braid, or mono leader. Quote
d-camarena Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 In light to moderate cover id get a medium heavy intead of the heavy. Casting distance will be limited with the heavy. Just make sure the rod has enough backbone 1 Quote
Jaderose Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 If you aren't fishing heavy slop..(like I do) you do not need a Heavy rod. M/H would be just fine. p.s........DITCH THE LEADER 1 Quote
Chughes37 Posted June 5, 2017 Author Posted June 5, 2017 I appreciate all of the replies! I'd much rather run straight braid anyways and not go through the hassle of tying on a leader. This may be a stupid question because like I said I've never messed with braid. Does the color of braid matter? I'd assume you would try to match it with the color of the water and/or surroundings. I don't think they really care what color the braid is, but since high vis line doesn't help with frogs/toads anyways I usually use green. Quote
Jaderose Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I've used hi vis green and now black and it does not matter. You have a lot of stuff in the way to break up the line. Most of the time the heavy stuff I fish...the line isn't even touching the surface Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 16, 2019 Super User Posted February 16, 2019 I'm going to be fishing frogs on chara matts this year and will use an existing rod . I pull bass out of those matts all the time with 7'0" mh rod and 12 lb test so that will be my frog rod . What frog would excel in getting good solid hook penetration with that setup? Frogs with slightly smaller hooks maybe ? I have an old Snag Proof that has worked in the past and just picked up a Booyah Pad Crasher . Quote
