gall Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 So Im torn between the radar 115 or atak 120 I understand both have certain features other doesn't but I guess I'm leaning more towards the atak my question is how does it handle in skinny waters and mainly moving waters ie creeks River etc that's a bulk of what I'd be using it for so the pedal or motor drive aren't a big necessity Quote
IndyBass Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I can't be a lot of help but I chose the atak 120 due to stability. I've had it in a few creeks/rivers and a couple lakes. The one river had a few places that were moving fast with ripples. Handled it like a big 1970 Cadillac, only thing I'm not 100% fond of is the scupper holes. In choppy water you will get some water splashing up in the boat. It's very stable, turns well, you can stand it it easily. I've never paddled back up a creek but I think that may be a lot of work. Hope this helps Quote
gall Posted June 5, 2017 Author Posted June 5, 2017 That helps a whole lot actually thank you if I rember the guy at the paddle shop said if I rember correctly the atak could be fitted with a motor but no pedal but don't quote me either way though there's a lot of drop in and pull outs on the river and creeks and I was planning on getting my girlfriend a kayak too Judy something not so pricey maybe the catch 120 but a little bit of water luckily won't bother me since I do a lot of wet wading the one thing I wish the 120 had the 140 has is the rod stager inside the kayak very nice little added feature Quote

The motor is called Helix, it's a lithium battery powered motor, looks cool but I don't know anything about it. I bought my wife that Jackson Kilroy used for less than 1/2 the price of new, supposedly only floated 3 times, looked brand new, not a scrape on it. What's the rod stagger you mentioned? Quote
gall Posted June 5, 2017 Author Posted June 5, 2017 In the bacj hatch the rectangular one of you open that it has firm inserts to stage rods let me try to upload a pic I thought it pretty nice little design to have in the inside of us kayak https://goo.gl/images/4Zq3jM The way the hatch is long but narrow to give you the ability to put rods in which I wish they would have done with the 120 Quote
benbo Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 I went with 2 Atak 120s. One for me and one for my fiancé. We needed something that was light enough to carry two of them on top of our car roof rack. We also needed to be able to get them up and down from there in the first place. I wanted more stability and didn't need to pedal for an added thousand dollars each. Get the longest kayak that fits your budget and needs. You will track better, have better speed, more stability, and not get turned around in the wind quite as frequently. Quote
gall Posted June 8, 2017 Author Posted June 8, 2017 Benbo thanks for your advice and some of the waters are pretty skinny and that's why I lean towards the 120 I looked at the perception pilot today I mean for the price you can't beat if you want pedal drive but the actual kayak is just lacking in general Quote

Yeah even the Jackson Kilroy I bought my wife has rod tubes on the sides. I do scratch my head a little when it comes to storing the rods but I'll just add something. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted June 8, 2017 Super User Posted June 8, 2017 I have the 140 and will be getting the 120 to go with it hopefully next month. I take my 140 down some very narrow skinny water that gets inches deep at times. The 120 will also excel in the same waters as my 140 can be a bear to turn around in some spots often making me get out and swing it around because the creeks only 10' wide and the kayak well it's 14'. The 120 will still need to be turned in the same way at some of my spots but won't be as bad. You mentioned the rod locker on the 140. To be honest in the year I've had it I've used it maybe 3 times. It's not all that practical when on the water. I used it when I went to the KBF national championship but it was simply to store rods for the 17hr drive some place other then in the packed truck with two other guys and all our gear. Quote
padon Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 seeing your from mechanicsburg i assume youll be fishing the Susquehanna and Juniata. i can assure you the atak 120 will be an excellent boat. i fish those same waters in a 140 and do fine. i will add a 120 soon. my 140 has a torqueedo because i have to put in and take out in the same spot a lot.i don't have the luxury of a shuttle partner.i put in motor and paddle upstream then fish /drift downstream Quote
