Rishin Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 So I have 30lb fluorocarbon and that's not gonna change. If I want to make it dive deeper can I just attach a lead shot next to it or will that not work 1 Quote

dsqui Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Clam makes some weights you add to the treble hook to use for ice fishing I would think u may be able to use them in summer fishing as well...i gotta ask though why are u so adamant about 30# floro Quote

Yes u can add weight to somewhere but it will mess with the movement of the lure not saying fish won't bite it 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted June 3, 2017 Super User Posted June 3, 2017 We used to troll original Rapalas with a split shot crimped a foot or two above the bait to get it down deeper for walleyes. Had no effect on the action of the lure at all. I can't imagine why it would. It worked great. We used to use a 3 way rig with up to 3 or 4 ounces of weight when trolling for lakers in 100 feet of water. The same concept is used on the Great Lakes to the extreme using downriggers with lead balls weighing several pounds to get baits down to the desired depth. Casting a rig with a split shot in front can be tricky but experimenting with the weight of the lead and the distance in front of the lure will be required to get the desired results. I know the OP bought expensive line he doesn't want to go to waste, but for anybody else trying to add running depth to a lure, thinner lines, like braid is the easiest way to do it. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 3, 2017 Super User Posted June 3, 2017 The line will "work", but it is is NOT the right line for a dedicated crankbait rig. I would recommend #10 Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo. http://www.sunlineamerica.com/shooter-defier-armilo/ Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 3, 2017 Super User Posted June 3, 2017 I know it is not what you want to hear but I would... 1. Purchase the right line. Something in the 12 # mono or fluorocarbon would be ideal 2. Purchase cranks that run deep to begin with. 3. Look up long-lining For me 30# fluorocarbon would cast like bridge cable. I have never seen the need to use anything heavier than 15# for bass fishing Quote
FCPhil Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Adding a split shot to the line shouldn't affect the action much if the split shot is a decent distance above the lure. Another option if you want a smaller change in depth would be adding a split ring to the line tie and upsizing the hooks and split rings on the bait. Large heavy wire hooks can really change the buoyancy of a bait. Quote

When you make a mistake correct it. You can save the line and use line appropriate for the presentation. You could use a Carolina rig with 1 oz weight and 3' leader of 12# line. Tom 2 Quote

Super User Angry John Posted June 4, 2017 Super User Posted June 4, 2017 That line might be good for swimbaits if you have a rod that will support that amount of weight. A 10 inch hudd will go a long way with heavy line like that. Can you shift that reel to a swimbait or flipping/punching settup Quote

However thanks for the tips Quote
Brad W C Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 Thank you. I guess my real question is will the crankbait still dive deeper than the weight/leader (deeper than the swim depth on the package) or will bouyancy keep it from diving deeper? May be unclear or even a dumb question but If I am trying to get them down to depth with a diver and if I get my diver down to 15 feet with a crankbait that runs at 8-10 feet will it dive deeper than the 15 foot diver ahead of it. Sorry if unclear or dumb. Quote
