CybrSlydr Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 So I think it's time to upgrade my sunglasses to a truly polarized set. I've got a cheap pair of smoked plastic eyepro from our local shop and I love them - but I think I want something a bit more. What resources are out there to help me find the right pair for lake fishing? I've done some cursory research and apparently lens color makes a difference and some are better suited for offshore/inshore/lakes and rivers. I'd also like to not break the bank if possible. lol
stk44 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I'm not to the point where I change glasses or lenses based on every single condition. I typically use Amber and dark iridium lenses for overcast and sunny days respectively. Im an Oakley fan and have never felt the need to look elsewhere. You may or may not know that they have military/ vet discounts which would save you some $$- www.oakleysi.com ; I believe you will need to send a copy of your dd-214. 2
Super User NHBull Posted June 3, 2017 Super User Posted June 3, 2017 It is. It that complicated, the major brands all put out good glass. You can easily get by with one part, bit before I had prescriptions made, I had 2 pairs, one of Everlast and one for blue bird days. Never found a need to change because I went to open water. Remember, the darkest or color can limit viewing your electronics. Gray seams to be a good universal color. Rose and blues sreamboat also good on lower light days. I do like full wrap as limiting side light enhances optics 1
dsqui Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Call solarbat tell them where u are and what u want them for I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction 1

I like solar bats because they are from right here in indiana I see allot of guys recommend Costa or Oakley as well so as far as brand it's a Ford Chevy dodge situation dig out what brand u want to go with (solar bat) lol and give them a call they have reps there that know what they are talk in about.
Big Swimbait Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 (edited) I was always an SK S11 fan because Costas were so expensive. I understand why & finally bought several pair from the discounter Steepandcheap.com. However, I was watching Major League Fishing & Fletcher Shryock had this really cool looking pair of glasses on. I looked at his FB page & saw they were made by Renegade. At 20 bucks, I had to give them a try - if nothing else to keep in the truck. Let's just say I haven't put the heavy Costas back on - they perform way above their price point. http://www.renegadeeyegear.com/renegade---fletcher.html Edited June 4, 2017 by 1201vilbig sp 3
CTBassin860 Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 The SK Plus didnt steer me wrong for 30 bucks.Sunglasses arent something id buy blindly.I tried on probably 30 pairs before pulling the trigger on them. Some just dont fit the face right, too loose or just plain uncomfortable.I upgraded my SK Plus blue lenses to Costa Fantails with copper lenses today, man what a difference.
CybrSlydr Posted June 23, 2017 Author Posted June 23, 2017 Dunno if these would interest any of you, but the price is right. https://www.safetygloves.com/products/vs300 They're not sunglasses and are not polarized, but are tinted and offer 100% UVA/UVB protection, dual-side anti-fog that isn't soap based so it won't wash off (TrueSheild 2F) and meet ANSI Z87.1 2015, CE EN166, and CSA Z94.3 (except for Add +1.0) Sounds like a nice pair of outdoors glasses you can hunt, fish and target shoot with. I asked if they offer polarized and was informed that currently they do not. Quote I see that you were interested in learning more about our eyewear. To answer your questions, yes, the UV protection is both UVA and UVB. I can get you some more information on the technology behind that if you would like. As for the anti-fog coatings, all of our eyewear has a permanent anti-fog on the inside (some coatings also have anti-fog on the outside as well. More information on our coatings here- the TruShield coating works for 90% of applications). Unlike other anti-fog coatings, ours are not soap based, so they will not wash off over time. We do not currently offer a polarized option, but you may want to try the Silver Mirror 12% (allows in 12% of light) or grey (allows in 23% of light) tinted lenses to reduce glare. If you have any other questions, please let me know and I would be happy to help. Kind Regards, Sarena Sarena Wing Sales Development Representative

I am not sure what happened, but I was wiping down my lens and all of the sudden I started seeing some spots on one of them. I looked closer and on the inside it looked like I was taking off some of the tint. So now one of my lens has spots on it. I don't know if it was sunblock and sweat that got onto the lens and wiping it down with a sunglass cloth rubbed the tint or some layer of their coating off. But very disappointed in that. I may have to look at these renegade glasses if they are as good as you say they are. For me the S11's performed just as good as my Wiley X's. My only concern with these cheaper glasses now is, will what happened to my S11's happen on other glasses that have a "coating".

Mumbly Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I had read this thread on Friday and oddly enough I was at Walmart last night and they had both the Shryock and Ike series of Renegades. I believe they had 6 or so different models of each. $14.88 2
Super User Munkin Posted June 26, 2017 Super User Posted June 26, 2017 For the money SK S11 glasses can't be beat. I picked up 3 pair for $40 and could not be happier. Get a pair of smoke or black lenses for sunny days and amber lense for cloudy days. Yes the $200 Costa del Mar glasses were better but not worth the price compared to the SK. Allen 1
bh91 Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 so how were those renegades compared to the other sunglasses in walmart? better or worse
Super User scaleface Posted June 26, 2017 Super User Posted June 26, 2017 I wear scrips so cant comment on brand but on color , amber is what i always wear . They just separate everything , make the shadows deeper. Its like they enhance 3D viewing .

Allen I am so happy with my pair of SK S11 Okeechoebee in Clear Gray/Gray Mirror. I had plenty of $$ left over to make a private donation to the bait monkey. Killer specs for sunny days
Super User TOXIC Posted June 27, 2017 Super User Posted June 27, 2017 Such an important piece of equipment!! Just got done with my annual eye exam and I am holding at my current prescription (same for 4 years) and just turned 60 with no signs of cataracts or eye damage from the multiple hours I spend on the water. I credit that to top notch eyewear. There are no do-overs on your eyes. You only get 1 set, take care of them. Years ago before I fished as much as I do, I wore cheap sunglasses. Then a friend introduced me to Serengeti Drivers as my first pair of quality sunglasses. While guiding I wore Solar Bats with no prescription for years. My eyes were never bad enough that I needed prescription glasses with sunglasses. Then I went to Lake St Clair for 15 years and bed fished for smallmouth. I was not seeing what others were so I decided to try out prescription sunglasses. I was contacted by someone I did shows and seminars with who actually works in the lab and makes the lenses for a lot of brands. Here was his advice to me,,,,,Very few make their own RX lenses. You pay big $$ for frames and the RX lenses are the same, He knows because he makes them and yes, COSTA, Maui Jim, Wiley X, are in that group. One that doesn't is Oakley. If you want RX lenses, the frames have to be sent back to Oakley. Expensive? Very. But one of the best investments I have ever made. I wear them all the time driving, fishing, etc. and wouldn't hesitate to replace them if anything ever went wrong. Also.....NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, get glass lenses for fishing. One bad hookset and you have an eye full of shattered glass. Poly-carbonate always for me.
