Although this year is different due to all the rain. Look at the favorite lakes these two jokers have listed. And whatever you do don't plan a trip to Pomona for bass. Quote

RangerDanger Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 I get it, but he asked a serious question and you gave him a disrespectful answer. Better change your favorite lakes. 1 Quote
mooneyes Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Fished Melvern Thursday, man was it tough, muddy and little high. Don't remember ever seeing Melvern quite this dirty in all the years I have fished it. Left and went to the power plant, water was better, and so was the fishing. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 3, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 3, 2017 @RUSS9999, it took 26 pounds to win at Perry a few weeks ago. Perry is the best for largemouth on that list. Melvern is usually a killer smallmouth lake, but it has been plagued by high, dirty water and a state that doesn't give a rip about bass fishermen. They are still there and can be caught, but it's tough going. Clinton is coming around for smallmouth, and has big largemouth, just few and far between. Pomona is perhaps unfairly considered a poor bass lake because of the lakes around it. I've fished it once in a buddy tournament and took second with 14 pounds, first was 16 pounds, both really solid bags of fish for Kansas. At this very moment in time, I'd rate them; Perry Clinton Melvern Pomona 2 Quote

I seen the favorite lakes the two jokers have listed, and was asking what's up with that. My son is a supervisor for Kansas wild life and parks. Lives in Oskaloosa so Perry and Clinton are close and I liked the looks of Melvern. Going to get the boat out there next May or June I hope. Thanks for the help! If I make it out there the fish will go back in the water, so they are safe, not going to kill them. 2 Quote

Melverns been so blown out by this forum in the past few years, I assumed every Tom Dick and Harry in KC knew about it. If I had the means I'd make the trip to Perry, sounds like it's been fishing bigger lately but can't speak from experience. I'd probably start out cranking and dragging a big shaky head on, and around main lake points. Good luck! 1 Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted June 4, 2017 Super User Posted June 4, 2017 I know nothing of Pomona but IMO the other 3 lakes will give you about the same outcome right now (unless you know a lake personally). Temps below 60 degrees for me it's Melvern. I like Melvern dirty with about 10mph NW winds. Blow that bait fish up on the bank and get to work with a Kalin's Sizmic grub or a Keitech Swing Impact. Maybe a tube. Second for me would be Clinton. 1 Quote

You can also check the KC thread, but it seems like Wolf is the only place anyone goes to. Quote

RUSS9999 Posted June 11, 2017 Author Posted June 11, 2017 I think with the Zebra Mussels Melvern is a no go for me. They say you need to clean the boat and all fishing equipment. Quote

Super User gardnerjigman Posted June 14, 2017 Super User Posted June 14, 2017 Ive never even been to the other 3 lakes and I would gladly go fish them blind before making the Melvern trip right now. That lake hasn't been the same for 2 years due to crazy amounts of rain keeping it high and muddy. I think everyone has some high hopes for it this year with some (semi) stable weather hopefully this summer. Then again, for someone that hasn't fished it much or ever, Melvern may work out just fine. But for those of us that have seen her in it's prime, it's not worth the trip (which is exactly why wolf comes into play) 1 Quote

Fish close to the bank when it's coming up or stable and move out away from the bank when it's going down. Quote

Largemouth move to the banks in high water events, the smallmouth being mainly visual feeders, seem to vanish into thin air, especially the larger ones. 2 Quote
mooneyes Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 With the reduced pressure on Melvern because of the water quality, and the size of fish that were being caught when it was fishing well. I can't wait to see what that lakes produces when it gets back to itself. 1 Quote

The lake was getting pounded and I was worried it was going to go the way of Wilson Reservoir (and it may have, only time will tell). Hopefully all the fish are enjoying the break from the constant fishing pressure, hopefully the shad are spawning and surviving well in the lower visibility conditions, and hopefully the rain stops at some point and the water clears up! 2 Quote
ljd1971 Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I went to Melvern Saturday 6/17 and put a report on the KC area forum. The bad news is that the recent hard rains muddied it right back up. Quote
