Super User Oregon Native Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 Was fishing with my son Tuesday and we were just talking and the subject went to food. I had previously quit my job (part time) (first time I've ever quit a job) at a local large grocery store. They had a salad bar and I would watch what went on and have watched this at restaurants too so....I am done with salad bars. Several months ago I was told I have CLL which affects the ammune system and yesterday I found out I have Pneumonia ....what a ride. Anyway to those who pay attention to little things there were many people who "did not" wash there hands before using all the tongs in the various salad items. There were many people who had a cough who did the same. The worst was when using the rest room close by and noticing people in front of me around lunch hour who did not feel they needed to wash their hands after using the facilities. Now...I didn't observe every day as I was not in area....but it was enough that....NO MORE FOOD BARS!!! Sorry for the Debbie Downer but I like you guys and I just had the light bulb go off in my head. Tight Lines Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I used to love a good buffet. In the process of going from 280lbs to 190lbs I had to stay away from them. It was easy though as the last time I was at one I saw a guy ladling some soup into a bowl he was holding. A piece of potato didn't make it into the bowl, it dropped on the side of his hand. He proceeded to then flick the potato back into the community pot the soup came out of. Now I am not a Germaphobe but that was just disgusting. It made me start being a bit more aware of the fact that not everyone is as considerate of their fellow human beings as I am. 1 Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I'm a germaphobe. Wasn't always, but a few years back the wife and I got so sick with the flu I was starting to think we weren't going to make it. Salad bars and buffets are at the mercy of everyone who is going through them. Not very sanitary. And yes, if I see you coughing and or sneezing, I'm going to go out of my way to avoid you. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 What about the handles on the shopping carts in the stores? They have all the same bacteria that you are worried about on the handles of the salad utensils. 1 Quote

Super User Oregon Native Posted June 4, 2017 Author Super User Posted June 4, 2017 Ya know Scott...ya got me thinking...not many people carry cash anymore. There was a guy I fished with who most always said....OH...forgot to get cash...will catch up with ya....he always did but have seen more cards than cash now days....wonder if we'll have to have a paypal account to fish small tourneys soon? david in va Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 I keep cash, you never know when you will run up on a deal. And more times than not you can get a better deal with cash. Back to the OP, I don't do buffets, good place to get the runs or worst. We are in a plastic world and I don't care for it at all. I remember picking up drink [pop for you northerners] bottles for the deposit. Kids miss out on a lot these days. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 5, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 5, 2017 I rarely eat at buffets, because of the germ thing. I deal with enough disgusting things at work, I don't need it where I eat too. Something about buffets seem to attract people who seem very similar to a lot of my "clients". I watched some kids at a buffet once eating ice cream cones with sprinkles. They'd lick the sprinkles off their ice cream, then just dunk it back into the container of sprinkles, rinse and repeat. 1 Quote

Not that it helps when you grab an apple that 16 other people have fondled, or package of bacon etc...stores are buffets in their own right. As far as money, yeah cash is nasty. I worked in a gas station part time for a few years, and would take 30 one's off of a stripper and give them out as change to people for the next several hours. Other times it was just nasty money from nasty people. Buffets and salad bars have always disgusted me as well. On the other hand you are keeping your immune system in fighting shape. Just wash your own hands and hope for the best. Quote

Buckeye Ron Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 I'm no germaphobe, at least I think I'm not, but for some time now I have been observing just how "unclean" people are. Buffets are horrible and after seeing people picking up food with their hands only to toss it back I'll never eat at one again. Haven't for at least ten years anyway. I've also noticed how it seems that most guys leave the restroom without washing their hands. C'mon man, really? That's why I use a paper towel to open the door! One time at work I followed a manager out of the restroom who did not wash his hands. He proceeded to open a door to a meeting room and closed it behind him. As I was passing by a lady I knew was going into the same meeting so I just had to tell her that the door knob she was holding had just been holding something else. Her response? Eeeewwwww!! Love It! OK back to your regularly scheduled programming. 2 Quote
