Largemouth21 Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 I couldn't find ANYTHING about this so maybe I'm the only one with this problem. I have an Abu Garcia Pro max BAITCASTER that had a small amount of sand in the handles. I cleaned most of it out with a Q-tip and then I unscrewed the small screw that holds the handle on. I got the sand off no problem but when I replaced the screw and handle knob, The handle wouldnt spin as good. I loosened the screw a little but It was louder and less smooth then before. I put a few drops of oil in and it spins way better but is still a little noisy. All the sand is gone and Im SURE there is no dirt in the bearing. What can I put in there to make it more quiet. I would rather it be quiet and smooth then slightly noisy even if it spins longer that way. Thanks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 If the knob feels that way I'd disassemble the entire handle and flush it all again. Only a grain or two can cause problems. I lube handles for smoothness rather than free spin. 4 Quote

Because its cheap and thats the brand of reel. Also how can I center the screw perfectly on the knob so it doesnt rub the bearing. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 If the screw seats fully it will not interfere with the bearing. Gear oil is what I use on them. It soaks right in where as grease needs to be forced in. 2 Quote

I will get all the old oil out and put on grease Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 If the bearing is seated properly the screw should be tightened and won't interfere with the bearing or knob. 1 Quote

Thanks. I figured it out!!! One question I still have is, what brand and kind of gear oil do you use? I will make sure to pick some up soon. I appreciate all your help with my reel issues. Quote
Super User MickD Posted June 2, 2017 Super User Posted June 2, 2017 Brand of oil is not an issue. Use any decent quality oil, 3 in 1, sewing machine oil, gun oil, reel butter. I do not recommend the red stuff-dries out and stains everything it touches. 1 Quote
