TxHawgs Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 What gear ratio do u throw your squarebills and crankbaits that dive up to 12' - 15' with? Quote
bigturtle Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 7:1 I throw my DD22 and 8XDs on it too, I just crank much much slower Quote
Blackhawk83 Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 I use reels with two different gear rations 5.4:1 and 6.4:1. The slower retrieve ratio is very useful when trying to keep lures in strike zone just a little longer and when fish activity slows down Quote
Super User NHBull Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I use a 6:1, but would not hesitate to use a 7:1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 6 for squarebills. 5 for a 12'+ diver. You could get by with a 6:1, but it would be taxing for a diver that deep. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 Normally I use a 5 but a 6 will do fine. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted June 2, 2017 Super User Posted June 2, 2017 Depends on situation. If I'm straight chunk and winding 5.5. If I'm sliding a lot, 7ish. Squares anything from 3.8 to 8.1. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 2, 2017 Super User Posted June 2, 2017 6. something :1 1.5's to 5xd's and everything in between. If they want it slow, I reel slower. I find it easier to slow down a faster reel than to speed up a slow reel. I only drop down to a 5:1 with 6xd's, and that's not for speed, but for power, as they wind a little harder through the water and it's less tiresome at the end of a long day of cranking. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 2, 2017 Super User Posted June 2, 2017 5.3: & 5.7:1 ~ I like to wind Fast so the lower IPT is good for me. Do not like using a fast gear where I need to 'slow down' to have the bait run right. A-Jay 1 Quote

And having the faster reel to reel up the slack after the drag makes it easier. I fish my CB like that alot, and helps with snagging less like when throwing a 1.5 in cover. Some refer to it as wormin a CB. 3 hours ago, A-Jay said: 5.3: & 5.7:1 ~ I like to wind Fast so the lower IPT is good for me. Super User WRB Posted June 2, 2017 Super User Posted June 2, 2017 The reel size determines what ratio I use, my go to deep diving cranking reel is size 300 baitcasters with 5.8:1 Calcutta or Cardiff round reels, 15' is deep. Shallow or medium divers to 10' size 200 size baitcasting 5.3:1 to 6.3:1 and size 100 reel 5.8.1 to 8.0 will work. Just depends on weight of the lure and the rod I am using, heavier lures bigger reels. Tom Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted June 4, 2017 Super User Posted June 4, 2017 I prefer a five ratio reel. I'll throw spinnerbaits on faster ratios when I want a faster retrieve, and a 6 ratio reel is fine for shallow to mid depth cranks. Any crank over 7 feet I like a five ratio though. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 4, 2017 Global Moderator Posted June 4, 2017 6.2 for the Squarebills, 5.2 for the mid depth baits. Quote
Chrisran99 Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I use Shimano Cardiffs for cranks. I have a 100 for shallows and a 200 for deep divers. I find it easier to slowdown or speed up the retrieve with the 5.8-1 gear ratio. Install a set of ceramic bearings in them and they are as smooth reels costing twice as much. Cranking power form the round reel( 200A ) paired with a 7'6" MH cranking rod that makes dragging 6xd's and DD22 all day at Pickwick bearable. Quote
McBass_Arkansas Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Usually 5.4 for all cranking but I have gone to 6.4 if I want to speed it up a little. Quote
