As mentioned in the title, I have four reels that all have a somewhat similar rough feeling in them.  Two of them ( Lew's LFS and BPS Johnny Morris Carbonlite 2.0) both feel very close to what I put in the title-  they have a rough feeling ( the BPS reel is much worse, mainly because that same roughness can be felt all the way from the gears to the handle knobs, and can hardly feel any sensitivity from holding the blank)  and both are very noisy.  The other two ( Abu Garcia Pro Max, and a Lew's Mach 2, the $100 version) they are similar but are more noisy than rough, though it is still very noticeable!

The roughness and grinding sensation feel like they come from the pinion gear on the new carbonlite reel and the LFS.  The other two just feel rough, not as sure where it is coming from.  The LFS makes noise while casting. The rest don't.  And, the worst part about three of the reels ( excluding the Abu )  is that none of the reels are over 7 months old.  With the carbonlite only being two months old.

All the reels have been " cleaned."  By that, I mean a novice and some YouTube videos, but they were all on there way to what they are now, whether or not I sped it up or not.  So can anyone help with this little bit of info as to what might be wrong with all four of these reels?

The fact that the problem is occurring on all four reels tells me that the problem is directly related to the way they've been treated, stored, and/or serviced.

If they're under warranty, have the manufacturer deal with it, otherwise a professional like DVT would be best.

Since it is in all the reels, maybe it is in the way they are stored? Chemicals in the garage can sometimes ruin my fishing stuff.

You have three things at work here:

workhorse level reels

less less than ideal service

potentially unrealistic expectations

if if you want to send them in I'll be glad to go through them. Also feel free to contact me directly for any assistance I can offer.

How do you carry them to the water?  This really sounds to me like the reels are getting dust/sand/grit in them.  And when that happens, it will take a lot more than an amateur cleaning to solve it.  Believe it or not, some carry in the back of a pickup, and how they stay in decent shape, if they do, is a mystery to me.

If you are not careful about keeping them clean in transit and storage, then that is most likely your problem.  This goes way beyond any chemicals in the garage, IMO.

Some reels have a characteristic "whine" when casting, but it sounds precise, not irregular/grindy, and there is nothing that can or should be done.

Not meaning to pile on but be careful in how you rest your reels.  I see so many people taking pictures of their catch, with the fish on the ground, with their rod/reel on the ground right next to the fish.  That's all it takes to get a few grains of dust into the reel and cause grinding.

This is hyperbole.  They aren't that delicate.

Welcome to the forums!

Definitely sounds like they need some TLC from

a quality service like DVT....

All right, thank y'all for replying!  And as I was reading through them, I think it has been from less than adequate care out fishing at ponds.  Most likely from me accidentally putting it on the ground after catching a fish.  Guess I should bring these reels to a professional to clean and put together rather than me.
