FishingYoda Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Hey guys, first post on here but a long time lurker. I recently got my first fishing kayak, a Wilderness Systems ATAK 120. I have gone about installing a Humminbird Helix 5 G2 SI CHIRP GPS into the flex pod that mounts the transducer onto the bottom of the boat. I have used two small L rackets to get the transducer with the include transom mount to sit below the cut out for the transducer so that the sides of the hull do not block the transducer. I took some pictures so you guys can get an idea of what I did and how it came out. I have a few concerns with the way it came out and am curious as to how they will impact my scans. 1. The transducer sits about flush with front portion of the hull and is about 4 to 5 inches behind it. It is well below every other part of the hull except for the small bit at the front which sits lower than the rest. 2. The transducer seems to sit at a very slight angle relative to the floor and it has a bit of wiggle inside of the bracket (not much wiggle) 3. The fishfinder also is very slightly off alignment with the center line of the kayak and flex pod. Just curious how the issues will impact my scans? I am new to this and not sure of he sensitivity of these systems. Will a perfectly aligned system function markedly better? Thanks again for the help guys. 1 Quote
scotty918 Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Your side beam is going to be caddywhompus since it is not level. How bad? Not sure. Also, the wiggle in the bracket may cause some distortion. How bad? Again, not sure. Take er out, take some screen shots (not with your phone but with the unit itself) and post em up. You'll probably be able to tell whether that system will work or not after your maiden voyage. Personally, I'd get it level and eliminate the wobble BEFORE going out, but I'm OCD when it comes to installation. If the manufacturer says make it level, I'd make it level. If it says it needs to be in alignment with the boat, I'd put it in alignment with the boat. Quote
