Super User JustJames Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I'm a sucker of try to make it work type. Some time I spent hours and hours on a lure just because I got one ghost bite. Gotta change that, thanks Glenn 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 Great video. I think everybody who fishes runs into this problem no matter what you fish for. I was surprised how little time they give to an area, most saying 30 to 45 minutes. But as some of the pros have expressed, its about a gut feeling. With conditions changing it has to add even more problems to that decision. BTW Glenn, the town name is pronounced MAW-HAN-OY. No need to apologize, most people not from my area can't pronounce it either. Quote

Thanks for posting. I like the responses about changing the bait/technique/etc before changing location so long as there's fish. I think we've all been victims of ourselves bouncing from likely spot throwing one or two baits all day. Fishing the conditions is pretty big, too. I'm surprised that none of them spoke about having any kind of system in place regarding changing lures. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I have a hard time striking a balance between throwing an unproductive lure all day and burning through a dozen feet of line with constant re-tying. Instead of focusing on specific lures, I try to change broad categories, so like if bottom contact isnt working, switch to something I can work higher up in the water column. If a subtle natural looking presentation isnt working, I will go for like a neon spinnerbait to see if they want that. Lately I have been erring on the side of changing up lures less often and it seems to be working out better then more frequent changes. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 Great vid, @Glenn! Thank you. I especially love Jason Christie talking about arguing with his new watch when it tells him its time to move...LOL 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 How long to use a lure? if it's not producing fish change it. I skip fan cast the whole area then change it. How long to fish a spot? in the past I know for sure where the bass hang out. Fishing from shore I have a selection of lures I throw. I use most of the different types of lures. I go from topwater, shallow crankbaits, smaller spinnerbaits, inline spinners, c rigged plastics, minnowbaits, swimbaits, split shot rigged worms. i use smaller baits in natural colors first if the water conditions are clear to borderline tea color stained. Fished faster. In stained water conditions it's mid sized lures in brighter colors. Fished slower. In muddy water conditions it's the brightest colors in the largest sized fished the slowest. i usually don't give up so easily. I go through my tackle box full of lures. Then I go through them again changing my presentation as I go. i collect abandoned kittens were I fish. I notice each one in the same litter is different. Some will attack a string right away, were the next one won't strike till I pull n pause. Some need to be teased more. Predator to predator the bass are no different trust me? Stay calm and the action will pick up. During the action and the frenzy slows down change colors first. If still no action change lure size. this is my shore fishing experience, get a cast out hummingbird fish finder. I use it to learn the depts, bottom structure, look for drop offs, flats, deeper holes, shallows. This tells me how to fish them. if you say your not going to catch anything before you go stay home. Your a beaten fisherman before you fish. Stay positive and motivated, learn how to use lures. Read everything here more than once. Trust me read or watch the video here then go out the try it. Listen to what the video says but watch what they do with the rod too watch the action. its skill that catches fish not luck, get out there. Quote
