ib_of_the_damned Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I have a 6.6:1 (26.1" IPT/ 90mm Handle) casting reel laying around and wanted to put it on a on a MH or H rod and use it as a multipurpose rod. I do prefer faster gear ratio reels, and recently picked up a 100mm Carbon Fiber reel handle that I was planning on putting on a swimbait reel. I have read that a longer handle may increase the IPT of a reel so my question is if I put the 100mm handle on the 6.6:1 reel, would it increase the IPT from 26" to maybe 30-32"? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 Handle length has ZERO influence on IPT. 2 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 No matter if the handle is 25mm or 250mm the driveshaft that connects everything is still only going to turn 1 time. Quote
The Bassman Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Actually a shorter handle will create a faster retrieve by virtue of its faster rotation (more turns per minute). No connection with IPT. That doesn't change. Quote

So you have more torque (less effort required) per turn all else being equal. Quote
david in va Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Looks like I have already given the only answer! 1 Quote

No connection with IPT. That doesn't change. You're turning through a shorter radius. That causes the circumference to be less distance. It doesn't change the retrieve ratio but allows one to achieve faster retrieve albeit at the expense of torque. *Accidentally quoted myself, but simply put, greater RPM is achieved with a shorter lever. 1 Quote
mooneyes Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I'm betting the difference between 85 - 90 mm in terms of speed related to circumference is infinitesimal. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 I have both short and long handles. The difference between 85 and 100mm is noticeable, though only in hand travel, not leverage or RPM. It's more of a comfort thing. I like short handles on reels where the rod moves the bait, and you use the reel to mainly take up slack. This has nothing to do with gear ratio, IPT, so called leverage, etc. 1 Quote
