Lures'n'Liberty Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Anyone have any good recipes? I don't usually use it but GF is getting bored night fishing for flathead and good carp/cat bait would really make my home a lot happier. I've got some old chicken livers out baking on the roof of the chicken coop, Cherry Jello, maple syrup, cornmeal, and the remains of grandpa's old dough ball recipe in my head. I also have an old blender. Quote
CoBass Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 If you go to YouTube and search on "Boilie recipes" you'll find a bunch of videos. fyi...boilies are what the British carp fishermen call their dough balls. 2 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 I used to make doughballs using Quaker Oats Cornmeal with vanilla extract added. To toughen the doughballs, I kneaded the dough in a rag so the balls stayed better on the hook. Although cornmeal doughballs work 'great', I have since gotten lazy. I've found that 'Whole Kernel Sweet Corn' is just as good or maybe even better than cornmeal doughballs. Pre-chum the day before, then thread about four corn niblets, side-by-side on a No.6 short-shank hook. Roger 3 Quote

Lures'n'Liberty Posted May 30, 2017 Author Posted May 30, 2017 I watched a few boilie vids and I may try some. Especially love that you can use a microwave to make them float. Did not, however, see many doughball recipes that contain the meat or meat byproducts that claim to attract both cats and carp, nor did I notice a single meat boilie. Quote

I've only caught common carp (European carp) on doughballs and kernel corn, so I really can't answer from experience. From what I've read though, corn is a very popular bait for grass carp. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 31, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 31, 2017 Just put some nightcrawlers on the bottom for whatever wants to bite. I do that sometimes while flathead fishing and end up catching some nice baitfish like smaller carp, drum, or bullheads too. 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 31, 2017 Super User Posted May 31, 2017 Years ago when I was into doing some carp fishing I used a standard recipe of any kind of brand flakes, crushed into fine granules, then add just enough strawberry soda to form the balls. They mold nicely on treble hooks and give you a decent snack if you hungry as well. Oh, and yes, they do catch carp! 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 31, 2017 Super User Posted May 31, 2017 I use wheaties for carp . Sometimes I'll use beer , soda or juice from canned corn for the liquid . I use to have a carp recipe shared to me by an old a carp fisherman . I dont remember the ratios but it was made from corn meal , flour , oats , salt and sugar . He mixed them together made patties out of it , then dropped in boiling water for three minutes . He then cut it into little squares . It's a real good bait and if I ever find that recipe I'll share it .When I was a kid the church published a cook book and that bait was my contribution LOL. If I ever find one of those cookbooks I'll have that recipe . Heres how I rig them .The treble hook is just a bait holder with the barbs crimped . This is a bolt rig and works great . I use a tight line . the carp sucks the bait in , feels the weight and bolts . It tries to exhale the ball but the octopus hook gets them . 1 Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted May 31, 2017 Super User Posted May 31, 2017 Caught a extremely thick 40'' inch carp this past weekend with regular sandwich bread. Corn is another good bait for carp as well. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 A can of green giant niblets. That's all I have ever used for carp, and they love it. Easy to use and cheap. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted June 1, 2017 Super User Posted June 1, 2017 Corn is a good bait .I use it a lot . Like in bass fishing , the same lure does not work everyday , in carp fishing the same bait does not work everyday . About half the time a doughball out does corn . I usually use corn to chum the area then corn and a dough ball for bait . Quote
