TH-Outdoors Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 What would be your choice for the best jig rod in the $170-$200 range, looking for 7'2 or longer Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 I wouldn't say any rod is the best, but take a look at: Dobyns 7'3" Savvy - med hvy / fast $180 Roger 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 You have a lot of rods to choose from. Irod IRG 744C is a good choice at $150 a little under your price point, 7'4" MH/fast. Tom Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 I'm test driving Lew's Custom Speed Stick Lite HM85 7' medium heavy fast with Winn Grips Lightweight performance with unbelievable sensitivity and power. The Winn Grips are awesome! Quote
d-camarena Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I use a lews tp1 7ft medium heavy rated up to an ounce. Great rod and way under budget. Another good one is the lews mach 2. Its a 7'3 heavy i believe Quote
kstephes033 Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 What size jigs are you thinking of using on it mostly? That will make a difference in the rod. Personally if its 1/2-3/4oz i like a much stiffer rod, H-XH vs a rod for 1/4-3/8oz in which i use MH. The new Tatula Elite 7'3" MH Ehrler rod is awesome for the smaller 1/4-3/8 size jigs, otherwise for 1/2+ in your price range i would look at the Megabass Levante 7'2" Perfect Pitch. If only one for all sizes then i would lean more towards something like the Tatula Elite since it will load much better with a smaller jig, and can still handle a larger one if need be. A sleeper rod is the Okuma TCS 7'3" Heavy also, i have a few of them and they are awesome rods especially since you can find them for around $100 or so. Quote

I don't own any Daiwa rods however the Tatula Elite series looks interesting with the small foregrip I Prefer and full handle grip. The Howell MH is 7'4" and rated for 3/8-1- three/8 making it a 5 power rod that should be ideal for a all around jig rod in the OP's price range. You are correct to ask about jig weights. Tom 1 Quote

Tom I do have that rod, and it is far from something i would throw 1oz on. It is a very good swim jig, keitech style swimbait, chatterbait, even mid crank rod. A bottom contact rod though it is not at all. Way too parabolic for anything bottom contact. It is 100% a moving bait rod. The Ehrler 7'3" is the one in that lineup you would want. Quote
bassinick Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Theres two rods I would look into the Powell Max 3D (160$) which I am a bit biased too and the Diawa Tatula rod (150-170). They are both insanely light The Tatula being 3oz and incredibly sensitive. The Powell one would be the 7'2 MH Xtra Fast and the Tatula one would be the 7'2 Heavy Fast Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 So many options in that price range! I'm partial to the Dobyns champ 735/736 or the Zillion 731 MH/F. Both can be had in that price range if you look around. Quote
EvanT123 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 All sorts of replies here and I'm sure very good rods each in it's own right. the questions I always ask my self when looking at a new rod are is the reel seat one that I like? Do I like the grip material? Are the guides suitable for the type of fishing I'm doing? a blank could be amazing but if the engonimics and function aren't there it is pointless. 1 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I have an Aetos MHMF that is definitely faster than a lot of fast action rods and has a TON of backbone with a really sensitive feel. I really like this rod. They sell for around $180, but compare favorably to a lot of rods in the low $200 price range. The quality is definitely on point and Fenwick did a great job with this series. I also really like St Croix's Avid X line (Like everyone else). It's always debatable and obviously subjective being that personal preferences play into gear heavily, but man, they are tough to beat for a $200 price tag. I'm a big St. Croix fan, and the SCIII blanks on up are just killer. These rods seem to have combined them well with comfortable split grips and micro guides. I don't have one in MH power, but I have owned similar Rage rods, and I really, really like that blank for jig fishing. If St Croix didn't offer me a crazy deal to upgrade to a Legend Elite after damaging my Rage jig rod, I'd own a 7' MH F Avid X. Quote
Robert Riley Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 You could definitely shop around for a Dobyn's champion, either a flip rod or a 735c. If you don't feel like looking around, check out the Sierra line, it's not as established as the Champion, but I've heard good things. You can also try the Lew's Custom Pro Speed Stick, they have a mag pitching rod, H/F 7'4" rated for 1/2 to 2oz for 209.99. There is also the St. Croix Avid rod, about comparable to that Lew's stats wise. 1 Quote
Finnz922 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Irod Crusher 733, 734, or 764 I own 733 and 764. The 733 is a great all around rod for 3/16 to 1/2. The 764 is a beast I use it for 7/16 on up. Light and sensitive. You won't be disappointed. These are fast action rods with a solid backbone. 1 Quote
