Incarcerated Otter Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 Im on information overload with trying to find the right hook size and my head is about to explode lol.. All the lakes I fish are very shallow with an average depth of 5'. bass are in the 2-5lb range on average. I have the 2.8 and 3.3 Swing Impact Fats. Can you guys tell me the right size hook I should be using ? I have 2/0, 3/0 EWG's..3/0 weighted and unweighted swimbait hooks, and 2/0, 3/0 round bend hooks. I would also like to try them with a 1/16 jig head as well. Thanks for any help. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 29, 2017 Super User Posted May 29, 2017 3.8 I use the 3/0 owner twist locks. 4.8 I use the owner weight beast hooks. I would guess a 2/0 would work for the 3.3 but have never use them. Keitech maked little jigs to fish them with. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 Keitech recommends some seemingly small hooks, but I have had great luck following their guide. 3 Quote

Bigger (deeper) hooks especially weighted ones, act like a keel and diminish the "shimmy" the bait has. The bait is soft enough that there's no issue with clearance and hook ups. Use the above guidelines. Jigheads on the 2.8 should have a size 1 hook. 1 Quote
Incarcerated Otter Posted May 30, 2017 Author Posted May 30, 2017 Thanks everyone. The chart is very helpful. I will start out with those hooks and see how it goes. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 30, 2017 Super User Posted May 30, 2017 The 2.8 FIs are maybe the most fragile lure I have used, but they are killer. In any wind or current I like to add a small split shot to the line to keep the lure down. I use the Owner Finesse 1\0 twist locks on them as they have a wider gap then the normal ones and they let you get a fish or three per lure if you are lucky. 1 Quote
Incarcerated Otter Posted May 30, 2017 Author Posted May 30, 2017 Ok I will give them a try. Do you think the 2/0 twistlock would work on the 3.3 ? Quote
wet_dream Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I've been even throwing the easy shiner on a 1/4 oz jigheadZ, mostly in open water that's pretty deep (15-30 ft). I'd adjust the weight of the jighead according to the depth I'm fishing. I could probably get away with a 1/8 or even lighter. This has been my most consistent fish catcher recently. It often gets inhaled before I even start my retrieve. 46 minutes ago, Bunnielab said: The 2.8 FIs are maybe the most fragile lure I have used, but they are killer. That's how I feel about the easy shiner, but I prolong the life of the plastic by rigging it upside down when it begins to tear, and have found it still catches fish. Or I'll cut a 1/4 in off the nose so the hook exits further back. I'll catch a few more fish this way before the lure gets trashed. 1 Quote

So long as the lure can still move freely, it should be fine. I use a lot of the small Keitechs and they all work well, but take a lot of patience to fish slowly enough when rigged weightless. I also use the smallest size Keitech shakyhead jig alot, its a great head for swimming small plastics and is decently priced for tungsten. Quote

I tried that last week with a Keitech swimsuit, and it still whacked fish. Another trick is to bite a half-inch off the nose of the bait, trim it somewhat into a pointy nose, and save it for a drop-shotting bait. Some of the best drop-shotting I've ever had has been with a chewed up Keitech that couldn't be Texas rigged or threaded on a jig anymore. 1 Quote
